Jakarta, INTI – The rapid advancement of digital technology across Southeast Asia presents vast opportunities for economic growth and cross-border collaboration. However, it also brings serious challenges in the field of cybersecurity. To address this, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Wamenkomdigi) Nezar Patria emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to safeguard the region’s stability and security.
He delivered this message during a forum held at the ERIA Office, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
Through this event, the Indonesian government invited Southeast Asian nations to strengthen coordination in securing digital infrastructure so that the ongoing technological transformation does not create vulnerabilities to cyberattacks.
Digital Transformation Must Go Hand in Hand with Cybersecurity
According to Nezar, digital progress cannot be separated from cybersecurity.
“Digital transformation and cybersecurity must move forward together they are interdependent,” he stated.
He underlined that without robust data protection and secure digital infrastructure, technological advancements could instead open new gaps for attacks and instability. Therefore, countries in the region must enhance cross-border cooperation to safeguard data sovereignty and build a comprehensive protection framework.
Three Pillars of Regional Cooperation
In his remarks, Nezar highlighted three key areas that should become the foundation of regional collaboration.
First, protection of critical infrastructure and data sovereignty ensuring that the digital systems supporting the modern economy are well-protected with high security standards.
Second, resilience against transnational cyber threats, such as misinformation, disinformation, and coordinated cyberattacks that could disrupt social and political stability. To achieve this, a clear framework for information sharing and national preparedness is essential.
Third, encouraging local digital innovation and industrial collaboration. Nezar urged technology industry players to take an active role in building digital independence through strategic partnerships and long-term investments.
“We must go beyond being passive consumers of technology,” he emphasized.
From Dialogue to Concrete Action
Nezar expressed hope that the outcomes of policy discussions would not remain at the conceptual level, but rather be transformed into concrete projects that strengthen collaboration between industry and policymakers across the region.
He stressed that forums like this should result in a long-term cybersecurity cooperation community capable of fostering trust and stability throughout Southeast Asia.
Toward Regional Digital Stability and Sovereignty
The Deputy Minister believes that regional cybersecurity cooperation is the key to ensuring stability and sustainable digital economic growth. Through synergy among nations, industries, and research institutions, Southeast Asia can strengthen its digital resilience while creating a secure environment for innovation.
This initiative aligns with Indonesia’s vision of developing a sovereign, resilient, and globally competitive digital ecosystem.
Conclusion:
Deputy Minister Nezar Patria’s statement underscores that cybersecurity is not merely a technical necessity but a fundamental pillar for the success of digital transformation in the region. With strong regional cooperation, Southeast Asia can maintain stability, protect data sovereignty, and accelerate secure and inclusive digital economic growth.
