Deputy Minister: AI Key to Indonesia’s Telecom Future

6 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer merely a supporting tool but has become the main foundation for transforming Indonesia’s telecommunications industry. This was highlighted by Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs (Wamenkomdigi) Nezar Patria in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday, October 2, 2025. According to Nezar, connectivity is no longer a luxury but a basic right that must be fulfilled to achieve social justice. Generative AI and agentic AI open opportunities for telecommunications operators, including smaller-scale providers, to improve efficiency, expand services, and enhance customer experience. Moreover, AI is considered capable of providing equitable connectivity access throughout Indonesia. The event underscored the importance of intelligent technology in driving the nation’s digital transformation. Industry players and the government were encouraged to collaborate in creating a more innovative and inclusive telecommunications ecosystem.

AI as a Transformative Force

Nezar emphasized that generative AI is not just about business efficiency but also about ensuring all Indonesian citizens have equal and high-quality access to connectivity. He stated that the proper application of AI can change the way telecommunications operators deliver services while improving the quality of customer interactions. “AI is not merely a tool but a transformative force for the future of Indonesia’s telecommunications,” Nezar explained.

Challenges in AI Implementation

Despite AI’s immense potential, Wamenkomdigi reminded stakeholders of several challenges that need to be addressed. Transforming organizational culture and structure to become AI-driven tech companies, strengthening innovation, and investing in digital human resources are crucial. Enhancing workforce skills and building robust data architecture are foundational steps to prepare the telecommunications industry for an AI-driven digital era.

Cross-Sector Collaboration

Nezar highlighted the importance of collaboration among the government, industry players, and academia to build a broad AI ecosystem. Through this synergy, the implementation of AI in the telecommunications sector can not only increase efficiency but also expand service reach for communities across the entire country.

Conclusion
The utilization of AI in Indonesia’s telecommunications industry is a strategic step to ensure connectivity access that is equitable, efficient, and high-quality. With investments in technology, human resources, and cross-sector collaboration, the future of Indonesia’s telecommunications will be increasingly inclusive and transformative.
