Jakarta, INTI - China plans to increase its wind and solar power generation capacity by 53% over the next five years. This target is outlined in the country’s renewable energy development plan released on Thursday as a green power target binding.
Through the plan, China aims for overall renewable energy generation to reach 1.8 billion tons of coal equivalent (tce) by 2030, up from 1.18 billion tce in 2025. The government also aims to make renewable energy a more reliable source of electricity when demand surges.
Wind, Solar, and Hydro Power Generation
By 2030, wind and solar power plants supported by storage technology are targeted to supply 8% of installed electricity capacity during peak demand periods. It is also expected to cover 20% of electricity use during demand spikes. China also aims to add more than 300 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity to be used when electricity demand increases.
Additionally, the plan aims to utilize 150 million tce of wind and solar energy for other needs, including heating and cooling, as well as green hydrogen production, which the government estimates to reach 2 million metric tons per year by 2030.
As for hydropower generation, the target is to increase capacity to 570 GW by 2030, up from the 450 GW target in 2025. The target includes pumped storage hydro capacity to reach 160 GW, a significant increase from 66 GW in 2025, and to increase the flexibility of China’s hydropower plants.
Additional Infrastusture
The plan includes the construction of deep-sea offshore wind bases. This step indicates the possibility of applying centralized, large-scale development model used for its desert wind and solar megabases to offshore projects as well. The offshore wind wil be integrated to underwater data centers.
Furthermore, China plans to pilot renewable energy megabases capable of transmitting 100% green electricity. According to Global Energy Monitor, wind and solar now make up only about 20% of the power sent through China's ultra-high voltage transmission network. The network moves power from megabases in the north and northwest to cities and factories in the east.
