BSSN Highlighted the Importance of Improving Indonesia’s Cybersecurity to Counter Threats

1 hour ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - The National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) attended a panel discussion at the National Forum: Indonesia Digital Leap, held at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs office on Wednesday, May 20. The forum discussed the accelerated development of the data center ecosystem, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity as the foundation for national digital economic growth.

The Deputy for Cybersecurity and Crypto Operations at BSSN, Bondan Widiawan, emphasized that the development of data centers and AI cannot be separated from strong and integrated cybersecurity aspects from the early stages of system development.

According to him, cybersecurity is no longer merely a complement to digital infrastructure, but rather a primary requirement for a digital ecosystem to generate high economic value sustainably. Security is an absolute requirement for a digital ecosystem to have high economic value.

"We must be prepared to anticipate quantum threats, so security must be designed anticipatory," Bondan stated during the discussion.

Mitigation Steps in Facing Cyber Threats

In his presentation, Bondan revealed that national cyber traffic anomalies throughout 2025 showed a significant upward trend. This surge was dominated by sophisticated AI-based malware attacks that are increasingly automated and difficult to detect using conventional approaches.

To address these threats, BSSN continues to strengthen cross-sector coordination, including supporting the Task Force for the Eradication of Illegal Financial Activities (Satgas PASTI) with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in securing banking middleware architecture from potential internal threats.

In addition to ransomware and digital espionage threats, the BSSN also highlighted the potential threat of quantum computing, which is predicted to weaken current encryption systems if not addressed early. Bondan believes that national readiness for the digital era must be built through a long-term approach, including the implementation of the Security by Design concept in the development of national digital infrastructure.

Conclusion

BSSN emphasized that cybersecurity must be a key foundation in the development of data centers and AI to support the growth of the national digital economy. BSSN revealed a significant increase in cyber traffic anomalies throughout 2025, dominated by AI-based malware attacks. It also highlighted the threats of ransomware, digital espionage, and the potential threat of quantum computing to encryption systems. One of the steps in anticipating these risks is by strengthening cross-sector coordination with OJK in securing banking middleware architecture.
