Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is set to present its Adsorbed Natural Gas (ANG) technology to President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, August 6, 2026. The technology is being introduced as a promising alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) that could strengthen the country's long-term energy security.
ANG Technology Could Support Indonesia's Energy Transition
BRIN Chair Arif Satria said ANG is one of the agency's flagship innovations due to its strong potential to contribute to Indonesia's energy resilience.
He explained that although the technology has not yet reached the commercial market, it offers significant opportunities for the country's future energy transformation.
"ANG, or Adsorbed Natural Gas, has the potential to become an important driver of Indonesia's energy transition, and we will present its capabilities to the President," Arif said.
According to Arif, ANG technology stores natural gas at pressures of less than 30 bar, making it safer and more practical than conventional gas storage systems. This lower-pressure operation gives ANG the potential to serve as a viable replacement for LPG while helping reduce gas consumption and Indonesia's reliance on imported energy.
Information published by BRIN states that ANG utilizes porous adsorbent materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), to store natural gas at significantly lower pressures than those required for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) systems.
The technology offers several advantages, including improved safety through lower storage pressure, greater storage efficiency, and reduced storage system costs. However, BRIN acknowledged that further research and development are still needed before ANG can be deployed commercially on a large scale.
BRIN Showcases Hundreds of Research Innovations
ANG technology is one of approximately 150–200 research innovations that BRIN is presenting to demonstrate how science and technology can address national challenges, particularly in the energy sector.
The exhibition features innovations from 12 research clusters, covering food security, healthcare, transportation, housing, space technology, aviation, nuclear science, rare earth materials, technologies supporting the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, and solutions for the development of coastal fishing communities.
President Prabowo is scheduled to tour the exhibition and engage directly with researchers behind the showcased innovations.
Arif Satria said the President's strong support for research and technological advancement continues to motivate BRIN's scientists to develop innovations that benefit society.
He added that the President has consistently emphasized that mastering technology is a symbol of national dignity, a message that inspires researchers to continue producing impactful innovations for Indonesia.
