Jakarta, INTI - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) believes the success of Indonesia’s national artificial intelligence (AI) development should be measured by the technology’s ability to deliver tangible benefits to society, rather than simply by the number of scientific publications produced.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Hammam Riza, M.Sc., BRIN’s Expert for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation, shared the view during the discussion “Medcom.id TECHPRESSO: Agentic AI, Are We Ready?” in West Jakarta on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
“The measure of our success in AI, and whether we are ready for AI, should not begin with how many research papers we publish, but with how far that knowledge can be transformed into technological capabilities and deliver benefits to society,” Hammam said.
BRIN Pushes Indonesia to Become an AI Solution Provider
Hammam explained that AI is an emerging technology that continues to evolve rapidly, meaning no country can be considered fully prepared for all of the developments it may bring.
BRIN is therefore encouraging AI development so that Indonesia does not remain merely a technology market, but also becomes a producer of AI-based solutions that create tangible benefits for society.
This effort is also aimed at enabling Indonesia to capture opportunities arising from AI development and strengthen its position in the global AI industry.
AI Development Must Go Hand in Hand with Stronger Cybersecurity
Hammam stressed that national AI innovation must be accompanied by stronger cybersecurity measures to anticipate potential risks and losses as the technology becomes increasingly widespread.
“As we use more AI, particularly agentic AI, the need for privacy, security, trusted identity, cryptography, and cybersecurity resilience will also become increasingly important,” he said.
Strengthening privacy, security, trusted identity, cryptography, and cyber resilience will become increasingly critical as AI adoption grows, particularly with the emergence of agentic AI technologies.
Hammam believes Indonesia has a strong opportunity to maximize the potential of AI while strengthening its role in the global artificial intelligence industry.
