BRIN and PT Tritunggal Karya Wisesa to Accelerate Biomass Manufacturing Technology Development

Jakarta, INTI - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is collaborating with PT Tritunggal Karya Wisesa to accelerate the downstreaming of biomass equipment manufacturing and processing technology through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Jakarta on Monday, July 20, 2026.

BRIN's Deputy for Utilization of Research and Innovation, R. Hendrian, stated that collaboration with industry is key to ensuring that research results remain as laboratory inventions and can be developed into innovations that meet market needs.

"BRIN has established a directorate specifically for industry. This demonstrates that in downstreaming innovative products, industrial partners are a crucial component in ensuring that inventions and research results from BRIN laboratories can enter the market and be directly utilized by users," said Hendrian.

Hendrian explained that the main challenge in the current downstreaming process is transforming laboratory research results into industrial scale. Therefore, the MoU is expected to be quickly followed up with a cooperation agreement to accelerate technology implementation, particularly the development of biopellets.

BRIN Developed Rice Husk Biopellet Formula

Taufik Hidayat, Head of the Research Center for Equipment Manufacturing Technology (PRTMP) at BRIN, explained that the collaboration was motivated by the increasing demand for biopellets as an alternative biomass-based energy source.

Taufik said that BRIN has developed a biopellet formula using rice husks and other biomass, including sorghum. This technology is now being developed until it is ready for industrial-scale application.

"We want to accelerate the formula we already have so that it can be quickly commercialized. We must seize the momentum for innovation quickly so that the research we have developed truly has a broad impact on society," he said.

Taufik added that biopellet development has promising implementation prospects as market demand develops. There is even an opportunity for PT PLN to utilize biopellets as an offtaker.

Accelerating Domestic Biomass Manufacturing

Meanwhile, Thomas Johnson, Director of PT Tritunggal Karya Wisesa, stated that the company sees opportunities for developing biomass processing manufacturing technology tailored to the characteristics of local raw materials.

He noted that some of the biomass processing machines currently in use still rely on foreign technology and therefore need to be adapted to the biomass conditions in Indonesia.

"We want to collaborate with BRIN to create a machine that is compatible with Indonesian raw materials. Rice husks, which are still waste in some areas, have the potential to be processed into economically valuable biopellets," said Thomas.

This collaboration aims to bridge research results from the laboratory scale to industrial applications. Both parties will also develop biomass processing machines tailored to the characteristics of local Indonesian raw materials, so that waste such as rice husks can be processed into products of economic value.
