ITPLN Students Developed a Mini Hybrid Power Plant that Combines Solar and Wind Energy

Jakarta, INTI - A team of students from Institut Teknologi PLN (ITPLN) has presented an independent electrification solution for frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions through the innovation of a Solar-Wind Mini Hybrid Power Plant. This technological innovation, which combines solar and wind energy, will be installed in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) region.

This innovation won the Climate Change Solution Innovation category at the PLN SustainAction 2025 event. Right now, the ITPLN students are focused on assembling the power plant prototype before it is installed on-site in NTT. 

The Solar-Wind Mini Hybrid Power Plant is a power generation system that combines two solar panels with a capacity of 590 Wp, or a total of 1,180 Wp, with a 1.5-meter-diameter Archimedes wind turbine driven by a 1,000-watt Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG). The total generating capacity is approximately 2 kW, sufficient to meet the basic electricity needs for one household.

The power plant system is targeted to be able to independently supply electricity 24 hours a day for a neighborhood unit (RT), with an energy production of at least 2,500 kWh per year. In addition to providing access to clean energy, this technology is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately two tons of CO2 annually.

The Power Plant is Adapted for the Region and Community

The head of the innovation team, Ibra Habibi Alfitra, explained that the idea arose from the desire to provide a simple and easily replicable solution that is also suited to the characteristics of remote areas in Indonesia with abundant solar and wind potential.

"We want this technology to be truly usable by the community. It not only generates electricity, but is also easy to learn, maintain, and develop independently in the 3T regions," said Ibra.

The Solar-Wind Mini Hybrid Power Plant development team consists of Ibra Habibi Alfitra, Amalia Mutmainnah Nasruddin, and Zidane Arrafi Iryon. They also developed technical guidelines so the technology can be replicated in other homes, while also preparing training programs for the community to ensure the system's sustainability.

ITPLN's supervising lecturer, Andi Makkulau, ST., M.Ikom., MT, stated that student innovation is judged not only on technological sophistication but also on the tangible impact it can have on the community. He believes that a research-based learning approach is one way to produce graduates capable of addressing the challenges of the national energy transition.

"The Solar-Wind Mini Hybrid Power Plant demonstrates that students are capable of presenting practical solutions. Innovations like this are crucial for supporting equitable access to electricity and accelerating the use of new and renewable energy in Indonesia," said Andi.
