Beanstalk AgTech Launches Monsoon Ventures to Accelerate Agricultural Technology in Southeast Asia

4 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Beanstalk AgTech has launched Monsoon Ventures in Singapore to help founders across Southeast Asia commercialise agricultural technologies aimed at improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, reducing environmental impacts, and strengthening regional food security.

The venture studio is supported by Enterprise Singapore and the Rabo Foundation, with six initial priority markets: Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.

Monsoon Ventures will initially invest S$1.2 million and target up to eight startups during its first two years of operation. Over the next five years, the studio plans to build more than 30 scalable startups while attracting and deploying larger amounts of capital.

Addressing the Commercialisation Gap

The launch of Monsoon Ventures comes as around 100 million smallholder farmers across Southeast Asia face increasing pressure from climate shocks, fluctuating production costs, and fragmented supply chains.

Beanstalk AgTech believes that while various agricultural technologies are already available across Southeast Asia, many have struggled to reach the market due to limited commercialisation infrastructure.

Monsoon Ventures will provide investment capital, recruit commercial experts, map value-chain pathways, and help startups secure investors or establish strategic partnerships with regional businesses.

Beanstalk AgTech Director Justin Ahmed said the company’s experience operating a venture studio in Australia has demonstrated how commercialisation support can help innovators bring their products to market.

“Over the past two years, Beanstalk’s venture studio in Australia has helped innovators raise more than A$22 million and launch 15 commercial products. In Southeast Asia, the challenges around commercialisation are even greater, which is precisely why we launched Monsoon Ventures here,” Justin Ahmed said.

He added that many innovations designed to strengthen smallholder farmers’ resilience often struggle to move beyond proof-of-concept stages into commercial deployment.

“Scientific innovations aimed at improving the resilience of smallholder farmers in the region often stall between proof of concept and commercial launch. Monsoon Ventures will provide the strategy, team, and capital needed to help these innovations bridge that gap and reach the smallholder farmers who need them,” he said.

Blended Finance to Support Startups

Monsoon Ventures will adopt a blended finance model combining philanthropic, public, and private capital, with support from Enterprise Singapore and the Rabo Foundation.

Enterprise Singapore Director of Food Manufacturing and AgriTech, Sharon Tay, said commercialisation is an important part of strengthening regional food security.

“Strengthening regional food security requires not only breakthrough innovation, but also a robust ecosystem capable of turning promising ideas into solutions that can be widely deployed. Singapore is well positioned to play this role by leveraging its strengths as a hub for innovation, financing, and commercialisation in Southeast Asia. Through our support for Monsoon Ventures, EnterpriseSG hopes to help resilient food innovations move from the laboratory to the market while strengthening Singapore’s position as a hub for agribusiness solutions in the region,” Sharon Tay said.

Rabo Foundation’s Regional Asia Lead, Bram Spann, said Southeast Asia’s agri-tech ecosystem has significant potential, although startups continue to face challenges in achieving sustainability and scaling their businesses.

“The agri-tech landscape in Southeast Asia holds tremendous potential, but also faces persistent challenges. While promising startups continue to emerge, many still struggle to achieve sustainability or scale their businesses. This is why our focus on blended finance and innovation is so important: bringing together catalytic capital, knowledge, and partnerships to strengthen the ecosystem,” Bram Spann said.

Monsoon Ventures is Beanstalk AgTech’s first venture studio in Southeast Asia, following the company’s Drought Venture Studio in Australia and its eight years of involvement in the Southeast Asian innovation ecosystem.

Conclusion

The launch of Monsoon Ventures highlights the growing role of technology, investment, and commercialisation support in advancing Southeast Asia’s agricultural sector. By combining capital, expertise, and strategic partnerships, the initiative aims to help promising agri-tech innovations move from development to market and reach the smallholder farmers who need them.
