APJII Pushes for Stronger Data Centers and Internet Exchanges to Boost Digital Transformation

7 months ago | Data Center and Cloud Computing

Jakarta, INTI – In an exclusive interview with INTI Media during the National Working Meeting and B2B Digital Indonesia 2025 Forum organized by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) on September 25, 2025, in Jakarta, Syahrial Syarif, Head of APJII’s Regulatory Division, emphasized the importance of reinforcing Indonesia’s digital infrastructure foundation. According to him, the success of the national digital transformation heavily depends on the capacity of data centers and internet exchanges to support the growing internet services across the country. He stressed that collaborative support from the central and regional governments, infrastructure providers, and investors is crucial to achieving fast, stable, and equitable digital connectivity in Indonesia.

Internet Infrastructure as the Key to Digital Transformation

Syahrial explained that APJII, as the umbrella organization for internet service providers, has a significant responsibility to ensure that internet access is available to the wider population. To achieve this, close cooperation with various infrastructure providers such as fiber optic networks, cellular networks, and other transmission media is essential. “This collaboration has been ongoing for a long time and has greatly supported the nationwide internet deployment,” he said. However, he added that the demand for broader and more efficient infrastructure continues to rise along with increasing digital service usage.

Data Center Capacity Still Insufficient

During the interview, Syahrial highlighted that the current data center capacity in Indonesia is still insufficient to meet the growing needs of digital transformation. “There is still significant room for capacity expansion,” he emphasized. Therefore, APJII hopes that local governments can provide easier licensing and policy support to facilitate investment in this sector. Investors are also expected to actively participate in developing modern, efficient, and sustainable data centers.

Collaboration for National Efficiency and Connectivity

In addition to data centers, internet exchanges play a critical role in strengthening the national digital network. According to Syahrial, collaboration between telecommunications providers and internet exchange operators will create a more efficient system and reduce barriers in data distribution across regions. “If this ecosystem is well-established, internet services from providers can reach the public with increasingly better quality,” he added.

Energy and Supporting Infrastructure as Challenges

Syahrial also stressed the importance of energy infrastructure support, particularly a stable electricity supply, as a vital component for the sustainability of data centers. Without adequate energy support, efforts to expand digital capacity will be hindered. He therefore encourages collaboration between the energy sector, telecommunications providers, and local governments to ensure sustainable and efficient digital infrastructure development.

Conclusion

Through this forum and interview, APJII reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the national digital ecosystem by reinforcing core infrastructure. With cross-sector collaboration and increased capacity in data centers and internet exchanges, Indonesia is expected to realize robust, inclusive digital services that can compete in the data-driven economy.
