Jakarta, INTI - PT PLN (Persero) revealed that its new and renewable energy-based power plant projects had reached a capacity of 22.57 gigawatts (GW) as of May 2026.
CEO of PLN, Darmawan Prasodjo, stated that this achievement demonstrates that the utilization of new and renewable energy (NRE) for electricity generation continues to show progress.
"As of May 2026, PLN has executed 22.57 GW of NRE-based power plants. It includes 0.78 GW that have been successfully operational," said Darmawan during a meeting with Commission XII of DPR RI on June 4, 2026.
PLN’s NRE Power Plant Projects are Progressing
He also said that the development of NRE power plants in the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) 2025–2034 continues to show progress.
He added that of the total target of increasing NRE capacity and energy storage systems (batteries) of 52.8 GW, approximately 43% of it has entered the execution stage. He explained that the implementation of these NRE projects continues to be closely monitored by the government. PLN is also required to submit periodic project progress reports every two weeks.
Additionally, of the planned 52.8 GW, 30.2 GW is currently in the project feasibility study stage. Projects with a capacity of 16.5 GW have entered the procurement process. Meanwhile, projects that have entered the construction phase have reached 5.2 GW. PLN has also completed the commissioning phase for capacities ranging from 0.7 to 0.8 GW.
"So, of the 52.8 gigawatts, 43% of these NRE-based power plants are in the execution process," Darmawan said.
Darmawan further stated that the government plans to launch the first phase of the renewable energy quick wins program, which includes the development of a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of up to 39 gigawatt hours.
In addition, the construction of an NRE-based power plant with a capacity of 17 gigawatt peak is also being accelerated.
"This can directly reduce the consumption of expensive fuels and replace them with cheaper energy," said Darmawan.
Conclusion
PT PLN (Persero) reported that the capacity of NRE-based power plant projects that have been executed reached 22.57 GW as of May 2026, including approximately 0.78 GW already in operation. According to Darmawan Prasodjo, approximately 43% of the target for additional NRE capacity and energy storage systems of 52.8 GW has entered the execution stage. Of the total target, 30.2 GW is still in the feasibility study stage, 16.5 GW is in the procurement stage, and 5.2 GW has entered construction.
