Jakarta, INTI - BP Batam is overseeing a strategic investment in an Artificial Intelligence Data Centre project in Batam worth approximately USD5 billion, or around Rp88 trillion. The facility will be developed on a 30-hectare site.
Deputy Head of BP Batam, Li Claudia Chandra, stated that digital sector investment plays a crucial role in Batam’s economic transformation toward a technology- and innovation-driven industrial hub.
According to Li Claudia, Batam offers strong geographical advantages, international connectivity, and highly competitive industrial readiness for the future digital industry. She noted that the arrival of the AI Data Centre investment marks a major milestone in accelerating Batam’s transition toward a technology-based, innovation-driven, and digital economy.
Power Purchase Agreement Strengthens Batam’s Digital Ecosystem
BP Batam’s commitment to positioning Batam as a regional digital and AI industrial hub was further demonstrated through the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PJBTL) between PT PLN Batam and PT Equator Gate System Batam.
The agreement is expected to reinforce Batam’s digital ecosystem while highlighting the region’s readiness to support globally standardized hyperscale AI Data Centre investments.
PT Equator Gate System Batam is an AI Data Centre developer backed by Range Intelligent Computing Technology Company Limited, one of China’s largest data center operators listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
Batam has been selected as the company’s first international expansion location outside China. The AI Data Centre development will focus on a High-Density AI Data Centre facility in the Teluk Mata Ikan area of Batam.
BP Batam Implements Fast-Track Execution for AI Project
Deputy for Investment at BP Batam, Fary Djemy Francis, emphasized that BP Batam will supervise the project through a fast-track execution approach to accelerate investment realization.
Fary explained that energy readiness is a key factor in the AI and modern data center industry, as these facilities require large, stable, and sustainable electricity supplies.
He stated that BP Batam is ensuring investment certainty, accelerated services, and industrial area readiness, while PLN Batam is responsible for securing energy supply. According to him, this collaboration demonstrates Batam’s readiness to become Indonesia’s AI and Digital Gateway connected to the global ecosystem.
The EGSB project is expected to attract other strategic industries, including cloud computing, semiconductor ecosystems, AI services, and various global digital industries.
The investment is also projected to generate broad economic impacts through the creation of professional jobs, technology transfer, enhanced competitiveness of local talent, and sustainable digital economic growth.
EGSB is estimated to employ around 700 to 800 professionals in the data center and digital technology sectors. Talent recruitment and development will be carried out in collaboration with universities in Batam.
BP Batam believes that synergy among government institutions, energy providers, industry players, and educational institutions will become a key foundation in building Batam into a modern and competitive national digital economic growth center.
Fary emphasized that Batam is no longer developing solely as a manufacturing industrial zone, but is transforming into an Execution Hub of the Global Digital Industry.
Conclusion
The Rp88 trillion AI Data Centre investment marks a major step in Batam’s transformation into a regional digital and AI hub. Supported by strong infrastructure, energy readiness, and collaboration between government, industry, and academia, Batam is positioning itself as a key gateway for Indonesia’s future digital economy.
