Jakarta, INTI - The widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) has accelerated the creation of manipulated and misleading content across digital platforms, raising concerns about declining public trust. In response, Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, urged public relations professionals to uphold ethical standards when integrating AI into communication practices.
Speaking at the Kick-Off of the 2026 Indonesia Public Relations Convention in Jakarta on Saturday, July 11, 2026, Nezar emphasized that the rapid advancement of AI has created an urgent need for communication professionals to safeguard the integrity of public information.
"AI is becoming increasingly integrated into public communication, enabling the production of a growing volume of AI-assisted content. However, the same technology can also be exploited to spread misinformation and disinformation," Nezar said, as quoted by Perhumas.
To address these challenges, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs encouraged thousands of public relations practitioners to contribute to the development of ethical guidelines for responsible digital communication ahead of the main Indonesia Public Relations Convention, scheduled to take place in Surakarta on October 17–18.
"We fully support the Indonesia Public Relations Convention and hope it will serve as an important platform for communication professionals to discuss and respond to the rapid evolution of communication technologies," he stated.
Ensuring Accountability in AI Use
Nezar stressed that while AI can enhance communication practices, accountability must always remain with its users. He emphasized that algorithms should never replace human judgment, and communication professionals must carefully verify and evaluate AI-generated information before distributing it to the public.
"Public relations professionals face the challenge of adopting AI in accordance with ethical standards while maintaining communication practices that are accurate, responsible, and trustworthy," he explained.
He further highlighted that protecting the digital information ecosystem requires close collaboration among academia, government institutions, businesses, and communication professionals to establish practical guidelines for the responsible use of AI. Such cross-sector cooperation is essential to minimizing misinformation, strengthening digital resilience, and ensuring that technological innovation supports the public interest.
Ultimately, Nezar reaffirmed that transparency and integrity must remain the foundation of public communication. As AI continues to reshape the information landscape, ethical communication and responsible governance will be critical to preserving public trust and protecting the credibility of both public institutions and private organizations.
Conclusion
As AI continues to transform the communication landscape, ethical governance and responsible use have become essential to maintaining public trust. By encouraging collaboration and strengthening professional standards, Indonesia aims to ensure that AI serves as a tool for transparent, accurate, and trustworthy public communication.
