1.5 Billion Users and Counting: Google’s AI Overviews Is Reshaping How We Search

3 weeks ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Google’s AI-powered search feature, AI Overviews, is now serving over 1.5 billion users per month, according to CEO Sundar Pichai in the company’s Q1 2025 earnings report. Launched in May 2024, the feature represents Google’s boldest move yet in redefining how users interact with search results through artificial intelligence.

AI Overviews generates concise, AI-written summaries at the top of search pages—giving users immediate answers instead of links alone. Despite facing early backlash due to odd and inaccurate results, Google has refined the tool through updates and broader query support. Ads have also been introduced, signaling Google’s intention to compete more aggressively with AI-native search engines like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity.

AI Strategy Expands Beyond Search

Beyond AI Overviews, Google launched several other AI-driven tools in Q1 2025. These include Gemini 2.5 Pro, an advanced experimental AI model capable of generating podcasts and powering smarter features in Google Maps, such as itinerary suggestions based on screenshots.

The company also confirmed plans to phase out Google Assistant, replacing it with Gemini on smartphones in the coming months—further integrating AI into everyday mobile experiences.

Strong Revenue and Product Momentum

Google reported $90.2 billion in Q1 revenue, up 12% year-over-year, supported by strong growth in services like YouTube Premium and Google One, which now have a combined 270 million paid subscribers. On the hardware front, Google unveiled the Pixel 9A, though its official release followed in April.

Facing Legal Scrutiny

Despite these gains, Google is currently under scrutiny in a major antitrust trial brought by the U.S. Department of Justice. The outcome could significantly impact its advertising and search dominance. While the trial is still ongoing, the stakes remain high.

Conclusion: AI Is No Longer Optional

Google’s rapid AI integration reflects a broader shift in the tech landscape: AI is no longer an experimental feature—it’s the core of user experience innovation. With billions of users now interacting with AI-generated search content each month, the company is cementing its place at the forefront of the AI-internet convergence. However, whether this dominance will hold amid regulatory challenges and rising competitors remains to be seen.
