Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 Officially Launched: Indonesia Enters a New Era of Digital Connectivity

Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia has officially entered a new era of wireless technology with the launch of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, operating on the 6 GHz frequency band. This launch is a strategic step to accelerate digital transformation and is part of the first 100-day achievements of President Prabowo Subianto's administration.

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Menkomdigi), Meutya Hafid, emphasized that the introduction of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 marks Indonesia’s commitment to adopting global standard technology. "By adopting Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 on the 6 GHz frequency band, Indonesia is taking a strategic position on the global digital map. This is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to driving digital transformation as a national agenda," Meutya stated during the launch event at Hotel Langham Jakarta on Friday, February 2, 2025.

Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7: The Future of Connectivity Technology

Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 offer significant advantages, including internet speeds of up to 46 Gbps, lower latency, and more reliable performance, particularly in high-density user environments. These technologies will optimize digital connectivity across various sectors, including:

  • Ultra-HD video and high-quality streaming
  • Cloud computing
  • Virtual reality and augmented reality (VR/AR)
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven automation

Meutya emphasized that connectivity is no longer an additional need but has become a fundamental pillar of economic growth, education, and national innovation.

Regulations and Device Standardization

To ensure a smooth implementation of these technologies, the government has issued two key regulations:

  1. Ministerial Regulation on Communication and Digital Affairs (Permenkomdigi) No. 2 of 2025, amending the regulation on the use of radio frequency spectrum based on class licenses.
  2. Ministerial Decree on Communication and Digital Affairs (Kepmenkomdigi) No. 12 of 2025, which governs the radio frequency spectrum for class licenses and sets technical standards for telecommunications devices in Radio Local Area Networks.

Additionally, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has established strict device testing standards to ensure that Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 operate without interference with other services. Testing can be conducted at the Indonesia Digital Test House (IDTH) or the Balai Besar Pengujian Perangkat Telekomunikasi (BBPPT). However, devices tested by government-recognized laboratories or originating from countries with a Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) are not required to undergo re-testing in Indonesia.

Impact on Indonesia’s Digital Economy

The introduction of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 is expected to be a driving force behind Indonesia’s digital economy. These technologies will promote the growth of tech-based startups and businesses while enhancing Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global economy.

"We invite all stakeholders, including industry leaders and academics, to collaborate in developing these next-generation wireless technologies. With a robust digital ecosystem, Indonesia can become a major player in the global digital economy," said Meutya.

The launch event was also attended by Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Angga Raka Prabowo, and Chairman of the Indonesia Technology Alliance, Justisiari Kusumah. This initiative positions Indonesia to face the challenges and opportunities of the rapidly evolving digital era.

The Future of Connectivity in Indonesia

The launch of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 marks the beginning of Indonesia’s digital transformation journey. With these technologies, Indonesia has the potential to expand faster, more stable, and more widespread internet access for its citizens.

Moving forward, the government plans to continue supporting the digital ecosystem with policies that encourage technological and infrastructure advancements. This will ensure that Indonesia is not only a consumer of technology but also an innovator in the global digital industry.

As part of the digital connectivity era, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 bring new hope for Indonesia to become more competitive internationally. With ongoing innovation, Indonesia’s vision of becoming a leader in the digital economy is becoming a reality.

Conclusion

The launch of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 signifies a new era of digital connectivity in Indonesia. With higher speeds, lower latency, and more stable performance, these technologies will accelerate digital transformation across various sectors. Regulatory support and collaboration between the government, industry, and academia will ensure the optimal implementation of these advancements.

As a strategic move in the digital economy, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are expected to bring substantial benefits to Indonesian society and industries. With continuous technological advancements, Indonesia’s digital future looks brighter than ever.
