WhatsApp Introduces a New Feature: Sharing Music from Spotify to Status

Jakarta, INTI – WhatsApp is developing a new feature that allows users to share music from Spotify directly to WhatsApp Status. This feature is nearing its launch and is expected to enhance the interactive music-sharing experience. According to a report from WABetaInfo on March 19, 2025, the music-sharing feature in Status has started rolling out in the WhatsApp beta update for Android version 2.25.2.5.

In its development, this feature enables users to access Meta’s music catalog, search for songs, artists, or trending music, and display a more detailed preview when sharing. Additionally, the latest update in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.8.3 reveals that the music-sharing feature from Spotify will have a design similar to Instagram’s music-sharing feature. When users share a Spotify song link to WhatsApp Status, the album artwork, song title, and artist name will automatically appear.

Moreover, users can customize the background of their status with four color options derived from the dominant colors of the album cover. Not only that, but this feature will also include a "Play on Spotify" button, allowing users and their friends to listen to the shared song directly on the Spotify streaming platform.

Ensuring Security and Privacy

The music-sharing feature on WhatsApp maintains a strong focus on user security and privacy. WhatsApp Status is protected with end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the intended recipients can view the shared content. Neither WhatsApp nor third parties can access the information about the shared songs. This feature is still in development and will be available in future updates. WhatsApp continues to enhance the Status feature to be more dynamic with support for third-party application integrations.

Competition in the Social Media Landscape

With the launch of this music-sharing feature, WhatsApp aims to stay relevant in the highly competitive social media space. Currently, various platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have integrated music features with short videos, prompting WhatsApp to introduce new innovations to boost user engagement.

This music-sharing feature has actually been in testing since October 2024 and began a limited rollout in January 2025. However, it is not yet widely available to all users.

Potential for Future Development

The integration of music into WhatsApp not only provides a new experience for users but also creates opportunities for musicians and artists to reach a broader audience through this social sharing platform. Meta, as the owner of WhatsApp, is committed to further advancing music-sharing features. In addition to integrating with Spotify, WhatsApp may collaborate with other music streaming services such as YouTube Music and Apple Music in the future. This would further enrich the catalog of music that users can access and share.

Conclusion

WhatsApp continues to innovate by introducing the ability to share music from Spotify to Status. This feature provides a more interactive sharing experience with an appealing design, customizable backgrounds, and a "Play on Spotify" button for direct song access. By prioritizing user security and privacy, WhatsApp aims to increase engagement and offer more integrations with music services in the future. This feature is expected to be available globally to users in the near future.
