Jakarta, INTI – The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly recognized as a key driver of digital transformation and global economic growth, including in Indonesia. Nailul Huda, Director of the Digital Economy at the Center of Economics and Law Studies (Celios), stated that the trend of AI utilization could boost the national economy in line with the increasing internet penetration and digital technology usage in Indonesia.
"The use of technology is becoming more widespread among Indonesians. In the future, AI will not only act as an enabler but also as a key player in our economic growth," said Nailul Huda in Jakarta on Monday, March 11, 2025.
AI has been applied in various sectors, from financial services to digital marketing. One example is AI-powered advertising, which facilitates ad creation, recommends the best platforms, and provides data-driven marketing analysis. Additionally, AI plays a crucial role in lending services by analyzing creditworthiness more accurately.
AI technology has also been implemented in chatbot services across different industries to enhance operational efficiency. Therefore, Nailul Huda emphasized the importance of human resource (HR) training to ensure that Indonesia’s workforce can optimally adopt this technology. While AI may replace some administrative jobs, the potential creation of 97 million new jobs in data specialization, data analysis, and machine learning presents a significant opportunity for Indonesia’s workforce.
During a panel discussion titled The Future of AI: Can It Strengthen Indonesia's Economy? organized by the Technology Journalists Forum (FORWAT), experts discussed the challenges of AI adoption.
Adrian Lesmono, Country Consumer Business Lead at NVIDIA, highlighted the importance of AI sovereignty in building Indonesia’s digital foundation. "AI sovereignty is no longer just a concept. Fast, secure, and independent AI technology is the foundation of Indonesia's digital sovereignty," he stated.
Sri Safitri, General Secretary of the Partnership for Collaborative Research & Industrial Innovation in Artificial Intelligence (KORIKA), pointed out that AI development in Indonesia still faces several obstacles, including a shortage of skilled professionals, uneven digital infrastructure, and limited funding for research and development (R&D). Additionally, regulations concerning data management and AI policies remain challenges that need to be addressed.
According to Nailul Huda, the growing wave of digitalization is expected to drive national economic growth to 5.1 percent in 2025. Digital transactions in Indonesia are also projected to reach IDR 2,908.59 trillion in the same year, indicating an increasing reliance on digital services.
However, he also highlighted that the main barrier to AI adoption in the financial sector is data security, with a vulnerability rate of 57 percent. Although Indonesia has established data security regulations, implementation and policy enforcement remain key challenges.
Meanwhile, Insaf Albert Tarigan, Senior Expert Staff at the Presidential Communication Office, stated that a more comprehensive national strategy is needed to maximize AI utilization in Indonesia. "We need an improved national AI utilization strategy as a blueprint for both the government and the private sector to adopt, develop, and implement AI," Insaf Albert explained.
AI has enormous potential to drive Indonesia’s digital economy, but challenges such as technological readiness, data security, and human resource development remain significant hurdles. To overcome these challenges, collaboration between the government, academia, and the private sector is essential in developing regulations, investing in infrastructure, and enhancing workforce competencies in AI. With these strategic measures, AI is expected to become a fundamental pillar in Indonesia’s future economic growth.
