Jakarta, INTI - PT Telkom Indonesia together with PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) officially inaugurated the Community Gateway at the Wamena Earth Station in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua, on Friday, May 8, 2026.
Telkom Expands Satellite Based Connectivity in Eastern Indonesia
The initiative marks a strategic step by TelkomGroup to strengthen the equal distribution of digital infrastructure across geographically challenging regions in Eastern Indonesia while reinforcing the nation’s satellite-based connectivity network.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs as well as President Commissioner of Telkom, Angga Raka Prabowo, accompanied by Telkom Indonesia President Director Dian Siswarini and Acting CEO of Telkomsat Rizal Ahmad Fauzi.
The event was also attended by Telkom Director of Wholesale and International Service Budi Satria Dharma Purba, Executive Committee Chairman for the Acceleration of Papua Special Autonomy Development Velix Wanggai, Papua Highlands Vice Governor Ones Pahabol, Telkom Network Director Nanang Hendarno, and Telkomsat Development Director Anggoro Kurnianto Widiawan.
Angga Raka Prabowo stated that the development of Community Gateway Wamena is part of the government’s national priority program to expand inclusive digital infrastructure to Eastern Indonesia.
“Connectivity is a fundamental prerequisite for progress. This is where Community Gateway Wamena plays a vital role, transforming geographical challenges into strategic opportunities,” Angga said.
Community Gateway Wamena Becomes Main Connectivity Backbone
Community Gateway Wamena serves as a satellite gateway infrastructure functioning as the primary connectivity distribution hub in the Papua Highlands region. The infrastructure is designed to address the limitations of terrestrial networks by improving both the capacity and quality of digital services.
The facility is the second Community Gateway developed by Telkom Indonesia through Telkomsat following the earlier establishment in Merauke. While the Merauke Community Gateway functions as a backup link during terrestrial network disruptions, the Wamena facility is designed as the main link and primary backbone of connectivity for the Papua Highlands.
Meanwhile, Telkom Indonesia President Director Dian Siswarini emphasized that digital connectivity is a fundamental right for all Indonesians, including communities in Papua’s mountainous regions.
“Connectivity is the right of every Indonesian citizen without exception. From urban centers to the highlands of Papua, we want to ensure that no one is left behind in the nation’s digital transformation,” Dian stated.
Currently, Wamena’s network transport capacity stands at around 7 Gbps with a high utilization rate. Through Community Gateway Wamena, the capacity can gradually be increased to a maximum potential of 40 Gbps.
The expansion is expected to provide more stable connectivity quality, better latency management, and stronger support for the rapidly growing digital traffic demand in the Papua Highlands.
In addition, Community Gateway Wamena is designed as an open-access platform, allowing utilization by multiple operators, local internet service providers, and institutions to create a more inclusive and sustainable connectivity ecosystem.
Conclusion
The inauguration of Community Gateway Wamena reflects TelkomGroup’s commitment to accelerating digital inclusion and strengthening national connectivity across Indonesia’s eastern regions. By leveraging satellite technology and expanding network capacity, the initiative is expected to support economic growth, improve digital access, and ensure that communities in Papua Highlands can actively participate in Indonesia’s ongoing digital transformation.
