Surabaya Launches AI-RAN Network Laboratory to Strengthen National Connectivity

5 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Amid the growing need for equitable connectivity reaching even the most remote regions, Indonesia marked a major innovation in Surabaya on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. The city became the host of the country’s first Artificial Intelligence Radio Access Network (AI-RAN) laboratory. This laboratory is expected to serve as a strategic solution to expand AI-based internet networks across the nation while also serving as a model for other cities. The announcement event was attended by ministry officials, representatives from telecommunications operators, and technology partners, demonstrating a joint commitment to accelerating the nation’s digital transformation.

AI-RAN: The Future of Network Innovation

The AI-RAN laboratory in Surabaya is the first in Indonesia, the third worldwide, and the first to be operated by an operator in Southeast Asia. The technology leverages 5G with Radio Access Network (RAN) frequencies enhanced by artificial intelligence, enabling broader coverage that reaches even underdeveloped areas. Raden Wijaya Kusumawardhana, Expert Staff to the Minister of Communication and Informatics for Socio-Economic and Cultural Affairs, emphasized that AI-RAN could serve as a model for network development in other regions.

“With this technology, even communities in remote areas can enjoy stable and fast internet connectivity,” he stated.

Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration for a Digital Future

The laboratory was developed through collaboration among telecommunications companies such as Nokia and Indosat with technology and AI firms, including NVIDIA. Vikram Sinha, President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, said that the AI-RAN laboratory aims to strengthen Indonesia’s digital future by integrating connectivity with intelligent computing.

“AI-RAN allows AI to operate directly within the network, safeguarding data sovereignty while providing real-world solutions from AI-based personal tutors for children in remote areas to precision agriculture supported by drones,” Sinha explained.

Positive Impacts of AI-RAN for Society

Beyond expanding network coverage, AI-RAN is expected to provide practical benefits across various sectors, including education, agriculture, and public services. The laboratory represents a key milestone for research and development of AI network technology in Indonesia while strengthening the national digital ecosystem.

Conclusion

The launch of Indonesia’s first AI-RAN laboratory underscores the commitment of both government and industry to accelerate equitable digital connectivity. Supported by advanced technology and cross-sector collaboration, AI-RAN not only broadens internet access but also opens opportunities for AI-driven innovation in education, agriculture, and public services in an inclusive manner.
