Jakarta, INTI - The government is strengthening digital education in Indonesia by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and coding as part of school curriculum. This is to prepare the young generation for the increasingly rapid development of technology and digital transformation.
Jumail, Staff Expert for Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen), stated that the government has begun incorporating coding and AI learning in the classroom for students from kindergarten to high school since 2025.
"The government has strengthened learning for students from kindergarten to high school through coding and AI learning as a platform to enrich their knowledge, including through the Codeavor 7.0 system," said Jumail on Monday, May 25.
Implementation has to be in Stages
Jumail expressed that this policy aligns with the direction of the Minister of Kemendikdasmen, Abdul Mu'ti, who considers coding and AI to be essential components of the Indonesian education curriculum.
"The presence of this new education system will certainly enhance students' understanding of the digital world, which is increasingly entrenched in people's lives," added Jumail.
However, the implementation of AI and coding learning is considered necessary to be done in stages. The government also needs to ensure the readiness of school infrastructure and teaching staff to ensure optimal learning.
"Everything must be done in stages, in accordance with the readiness of schools and teachers," he said.
Students Must be Supported to Develop Their Practical Skills
Furthermore, the presence of coding and AI learning has also encouraged various initiators to hold global AI coding competitions in Indonesia for Indonesian students. These competitions are considered to help students develop practical skills, not just understanding theory in the classroom.
Meilani Hendrawidjaja, founder of KodeKiddo, stated that various technology competitions can provide a space for students to apply their creativity in the form of real-life projects.
"Students often receive theory about coding and artificial intelligence in school, but the presence of various competitions further empowers students to apply their creativity in real-life projects," said Meilani.
According to her, students' success in understanding coding and AI is also inseparable from the support of parents and teachers in fostering children's creativity and innovation skills.
"A learning system that combines theory in school and practice during competitions will certainly further develop students' creativity in solving various challenges. This is where students' innovation and collaboration skills will be most evident," she said.
Conclusion
The government has begun strengthening digital education in Indonesia by incorporating coding and artificial intelligence (AI) learning for students. This policy is considered crucial for preparing the students to face technological developments and digital transformations. Implementation is considered necessary to be done in stages by preparing the readiness of schools, infrastructure, and teaching staff to ensure optimal learning. In addition to learning in class, coding and AI competitions can also help students develop creativity, innovation, and practical skills through real-life projects.
