Strengthening Indonesia-US Digital Cooperation: Strategic Steps Toward the Indonesia Digital Vision 2045

1 year ago | News

Jakarta, INTI – Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Menkomdigi), Meutya Hafid, has underscored the critical importance of strengthening digital trade and investment cooperation between Indonesia and the United States (US). This effort is a key initiative to achieve the Indonesia Digital Vision 2045 (VID 2045), as outlined by President Prabowo Subianto.

Speaking at a meeting with the US-ASEAN Business Council (US-ABC) held at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi), Meutya emphasized that the VID 2045 blueprint is designed to address digital challenges and orchestrate advancements across three core pillars: digital economy, digital governance, and digital society.

"This initiative represents Indonesia’s commitment to becoming a resilient and inclusive digital nation. We believe that collaboration with the US will accelerate digital transformation across various sectors," said Meutya Hafid during the meeting.

The Three Core Pillars of Indonesia Digital Vision 2045

1. Digital Economy

The digital economy is envisioned as a primary driver of Indonesia’s growth by 2045, with the goal of contributing up to 30% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Key initiatives include digitalizing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), accelerating the adoption of digital payment systems, and fostering entrepreneurship in the technology sector.

2. Digital Governance

Efforts are underway to digitize government services to enhance bureaucratic efficiency and public service accessibility. The implementation of the Electronic-Based Government System (SPBE) serves as a cornerstone in this transformation.

3. Digital Society

To create an inclusive digital society, Kemkomdigi focuses on improving digital literacy, expanding internet access to remote areas, and empowering communities through technology. These efforts aim to reduce the digital divide and promote equality of opportunity.

The Strategic Role of Indonesia-US Cooperation

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Wamenkomdigi), Nezar Patria, who also attended the meeting, highlighted the pivotal role of Indonesia-US collaboration in realizing shared goals within the digital sector.

"This partnership is not just about technology; it’s about fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Our comprehensive efforts have laid the groundwork for Indonesia to emerge as a global digital powerhouse," said Nezar.

He further explained that Indonesia and the US, under ASEAN cooperation, are currently engaging in discussions through the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on E-Commerce and Digital Economy (ACCED). The focus is on accelerating the implementation of the ASEAN Digital Integration Framework Action Plan (DIFAP), particularly in the areas of digital trade, electronic payments, and tech-driven entrepreneurship.

Artificial Intelligence (AI): A Key Future Pillar

One of the significant focus areas in the Indonesia-US partnership is the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Nezar emphasized that AI is expected to play a transformative role in shaping Indonesia's future digital economy.

"Ethical and responsible AI development is a top priority, as demonstrated by the ASEAN Responsible AI Roadmap Workshop held in Jakarta in June 2024. This initiative highlights the importance of AI in fostering a future-ready digital economy that aligns with our region’s values and aspirations," he explained.

AI is anticipated to revolutionize various domains, including big data analytics, business process automation, and the enhancement of public services such as education and healthcare.

Collaboration with Leading Technology Companies

The meeting also saw participation from top executives of prominent US technology companies, including Netflix, Qualcomm Inc., Apple Inc., Oracle, Visa, Intel Corporation, Meta, Expedia Group, FedEx, and IBM. Strategic partnerships with these corporations are expected to significantly bolster Indonesia's digital infrastructure.

"Partnerships with the private sector are equally vital, especially in ensuring national data security and developing efficient data centers," added Nezar.

Ambitious Goals: 8% Digital Economy Growth Target

Indonesia has set an ambitious target of 8% annual growth for its digital economy, driven by transformative initiatives under the Indonesia Digital Vision 2045. The government is optimistic that cutting-edge technology and global collaborations will position Indonesia as a key player in the global digital economy.

Comprehensive Cooperation for Cybersecurity and Infrastructure

During the meeting, discussions also encompassed cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, and AI initiatives. Indonesia and the US aim to strengthen their cooperation to address global challenges in these areas.

"Cybersecurity is crucial in today’s interconnected world, and through our partnership with the US, we aim to enhance our resilience against digital threats," Nezar stated.

The joint initiatives also focus on creating robust digital infrastructure to support Indonesia's growing digital ecosystem. This includes developing advanced data centers, improving connectivity, and integrating smart technologies across sectors.

Vision 2045: Toward a Sustainable Digital Future

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, supported by the US and ASEAN, is steadfast in its commitment to building an inclusive and sustainable digital future for Indonesia.

This digital transformation is not just about economic advancement; it also aims to improve public services, reduce digital inequality, and create new opportunities for all Indonesians. With these strategic steps, Indonesia is well on its way to achieving its ambitious vision of becoming a technologically advanced nation by 2045.

The strengthened Indonesia-US digital partnership underscores the shared commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability. As both nations work closely to achieve their digital goals, the collaboration sets a benchmark for regional and global partnerships in the digital era.
