SpaceX Acquires xAI to Build Data Centers in Space

4 months ago | Data Canters

Jakarta, INTI - SpaceX, the spaceflight company owned by Elon Musk, has announced the acquisition of artificial intelligence startup xAI as part of a plan to develop data centers in outer space.

SpaceX-xAI Merger Strategy

The acquisition was reported by TechCrunch on Monday and is said to create a combined entity that could become the world’s most valuable private company.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who is also the founder of xAI, stated in a memo published on the company’s official website that the merger is intended to address growing infrastructure demands for artificial intelligence.

Musk noted that current AI development remains heavily dependent on large, land-based data centers.

Such terrestrial data centers require massive electricity consumption and highly intensive cooling systems.

According to Elon Musk, global electricity demand for artificial intelligence cannot be met in the near term if reliance remains solely on land-based solutions, as this would place excessive strain on both communities and the environment.

The combined valuation of SpaceX and xAI is estimated at approximately US$1.25 trillion, equivalent to around IDR 20.97 quadrillion.

Impact of the Acquisition and Business Direction

SpaceX has previously been reported to be preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), potentially as early as June 2026.

However, there is still no certainty as to whether the acquisition of xAI will affect SpaceX’s IPO plans.

Despite being owned by the same founder, SpaceX and xAI face very different financial challenges.

xAI is reported to be spending around US$1 billion per month, while SpaceX generates the majority of its revenue from its Starlink satellite launch and connectivity services.

The acquisition of xAI is widely seen as part of Elon Musk’s broader strategy to integrate his various business ventures.

Previously, xAI also acquired the social media platform X. Musk has claimed that the combined valuation of the companies following the acquisition of X reached US$113 billion, or approximately IDR 1.89 quadrillion.

To realize the vision of space-based data centers, Musk stated that a constant flow of satellites would be required.

This satellite deployment is expected to help ensure SpaceX secures a sustainable revenue stream in the future.

In the near term, SpaceX will remain focused on testing the Starship rocket for missions to the Moon and Mars.

Meanwhile, xAI will continue to concentrate on competing with major artificial intelligence companies such as Google and OpenAI.

Conclusion

The acquisition of xAI by SpaceX marks a bold strategic move to address the growing infrastructure challenges of artificial intelligence, particularly the rising demand for energy and cooling associated with land-based data centers. By exploring space-based data centers supported by a constant flow of satellites, Elon Musk aims to create a more sustainable and scalable foundation for future AI development.

At the same time, the merger reflects a broader effort to integrate Musk’s business ecosystem, while allowing SpaceX and xAI to maintain distinct operational focuses. As SpaceX advances its ambitions in space exploration and satellite services, and xAI continues to compete in the global AI race, the success of this vision will depend on technological feasibility, financial sustainability, and the ability to balance innovation with environmental and economic considerations.
