Jakarta, INTI - A survey by Indonesian Internet Service Provider Association (APJII) reveals that Indonesia's internet users reaches 235.26 million in 2026. This surge strengthens the growth opportunities for the digital economy, from e-commerce to internet-based digital services.
The survey revealed that national internet penetration reached 81.7% of the total population of 287.3 million. This figure is an increase compared to 80.66% in 2025.
APJII Chairman, Muhammad Arif, stated that the internet has now become a primary need for people across various sectors. He expressed that the national digital transformation continues to move towards greater inclusiveness.
"The internet is no longer just a supplementary need, but has become an integral part of Indonesian social, economic, educational, and public service activities. The results of this survey indicate that the national digital transformation continues to develop and needs to be supported by equitable infrastructure distribution, improved service quality, and strengthened digital literacy," he said in an official statement on Friday, May 22, 2026.
The survey found that communication and social media activities were the biggest reasons people used the internet, accounting for 19.9%. Digital entertainment, such as streaming and gaming, followed at 19.7%, an followed by e-commerce transactions and digital services at 18.7%.
Internet Subscribers also Increases
This data shows that public consumption of digital services continues to increase. This situation also opens up opportunities for expansion for the telecommunications industry, digital platforms, and national e-commerce players.
In terms of infrastructure, fixed broadband internet subscribers will reach 99.5 million by 2026. This number is a 3.6% increase compared to the previous year, with cable and fiber-optic services dominating at 37.9%.
However, APJII assesses that the digital divide between regions remains a challenge. Internet penetration in Java has reached 85.95%, while Maluku and Papua remain at 69.74%.
"Hopefully, the results of this survey will be useful not only for APJII, but also for our fellow APJII members and all Indonesians who need it," said Arif.
Conclusion
The number of internet users in Indonesia is expected to reach 235.26 million by 2026, with a penetration rate of 81.7% of the total population, an increase compared to the previous year. The APJII survey shows that the internet is now a primary need for people for social, economic, educational, and public services activities.
