Jakarta, INTI - CNA reported that Singaporean lawmakers unanimously passed a motion affirming that the country will not have jobless growth amid the artificial intelligence (AI) transition.
“All members recognise that AI adoption is not optional. If Singapore is to stay competitive, both enterprises and workers need to use AI fluency to seize new opportunities,” said Ng Chee Meng, the Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).
The Motion was Passed in 2 Days
The non-governmental member motion was passed on Wednesday, May 6, after two days of debate. The parliament urged the government to acknowledge the serious impact of AI on the employment sector and ensure that economic progress is inclusive for all segments of society.
According to CNA, this is the first motion proposed by the labor movement in over a decade.
"Left to market, AI growth may not automatically benefit workers," said Ng Chee Meng.
Ng called the motion's victory a clear consensus that the impact of AI on workers must be well-managed and measured.
Conclusion
The Singapore Parliament unanimously passed a motion affirming that AI-driven economic growth must be accompanied by job creation and inclusive benefits for society. The motion, pushed by the labor movement, calls on the government to anticipate the impact of AI on the workforce so that it is not entirely left to market mechanisms.
