Singapore Launches Driverless Taxis in Punggol Starting Early 2026

6 months ago | E - Mobility

Jakarta, INTI – The demand for more efficient, safer, and technology-driven transportation continues to challenge major cities worldwide. Amid the global race to deliver next-generation vehicles, Singapore has taken a concrete step by launching driverless taxi services, also known as robotaxis. This program is the result of a collaboration between Chinese robotaxi companies WeRide Inc. and Pony AI Inc., together with local partners Grab Holdings Ltd. and ComfortDelGro. Trial operations began in September 2025, while official service is targeted to roll out in early 2026 in Punggol, Singapore. The introduction of robotaxis is expected to provide a solution for urban mobility needs while marking a new era of transportation in Southeast Asia.

Trial Operations and Routes

Under the plan, Grab and WeRide will operate autonomous vehicles along routes spanning 10 to 12 kilometers in Punggol. Meanwhile, Pony AI and ComfortDelGro will launch similar services in the coming months once regulatory approvals are secured. The initial fleet will consist of 11 vehicles, which have already entered the testing phase. According to Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), the service will play a key role in the development of the city-state’s future public transport system.

Government Support and Integration Plans

Singapore’s Ministry of Transport previously announced plans to deploy autonomous vehicles in public housing areas by the end of 2025. This initiative aims to integrate robotaxi services into the national public transport network, making them not just an alternative option but also a vital component of the broader urban mobility ecosystem.

Global Expansion of Robotaxi Companies

Beyond Singapore, Chinese robotaxi firms are rapidly expanding into international markets. WeRide, Pony AI, and Apollo Go, a subsidiary of Baidu Inc., are aggressively exploring opportunities across the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Baidu has even set a target to launch robotaxi services in both Singapore and Malaysia within this year. The presence of these global players positions Singapore as one of the most dynamic hubs for driverless transport trials worldwide.

Conclusion

The launch of robotaxis in Singapore marks a new chapter in Southeast Asia’s transportation landscape. Backed by international collaboration and government support, the driverless taxi service is not only a symbol of innovation but also a practical solution to urban mobility challenges. If successful, Singapore could serve as a model for autonomous vehicle development across the region and beyond.
