Seven Ministers Endorse AI Guidelines to Transform Education

2 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesian government has recently agreed on joint guidelines for the use of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in education. The policy is designed to ensure that technology supports the learning process while safeguarding children from potential risks in the digital environment.

The guidelines are formalized in a Joint Decree of Seven Ministers on the Utilization and Learning of Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence across formal, non-formal, and informal education pathways. The regulation covers the use of digital technology and AI at all levels of education, from early childhood to higher education.

Ensuring Age Appropriate Technology Use

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK), Pratikno, emphasized that this regulation is crucial to ensure that technology use in education considers children’s readiness and developmental stages.

“The use of digital technology and artificial intelligence for children must be carried out wisely, providing positive benefits while minimizing risks. Age-appropriate criteria and child readiness are essential in its regulation,” Pratikno said after signing the joint agreement at the PMK Office in Jakarta on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

He added that the younger the child, the more restricted and supervised their technology use should be, both in terms of duration and the type of content accessed during learning activities.

Meanwhile, Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, highlighted the importance of this policy, noting Indonesia’s large population of internet users, including children.

Promoting Positive and Safe Digital Learning

“Indonesia has a significant number of child internet users. Therefore, we must ensure they are not merely a target or market for the tech industry but can utilize technology according to their readiness,” Meutya said.

She stressed that the policy represents a government effort to ensure that advances in digital technology and artificial intelligence are harnessed positively in education.

“Every technological advancement must consider the user’s readiness, especially children. The principle of ‘Wait Until the Child is Ready,’ promoted in our child protection policies in the digital space (PP Tunas), is also applied to the use of AI in education,” she added.

Through this policy, the government aims to guide schools, teachers, and families in using digital technology appropriately. As a result, Indonesian children are expected to engage with and learn technology from an early age without compromising cognitive development or character building.

The decree was signed by Pratikno; Meutya Hafid; Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto; Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti; Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Arifah Choiri Fauzi; Minister of Population and Family Development, Wihaji; and Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar.

Conclusion

The joint ministerial decree provides a clear framework to harness AI and digital technology in education safely, ensuring that children benefit from innovation while their developmental needs and safety are fully considered.
