Satelit Nusantara Lima Starts Commercial Operations, Extending Services to Remote Areas and Two Neighboring Countries

4 hours ago | Network Infrastructure

Jakarta, INTI - PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (PSN) has officially received an operating license from Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs of Indonesia for the operation of Satelit Nusantara Lima. The satellite is designed to strengthen digital connectivity across Indonesia’s underserved, frontier, outermost, and remote (3T) regions, as well as neighboring ASEAN countries.

President Director of PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara, Adi Rahman Adiwoso, stated that Nusantara Lima represents a symbol of national technological independence. The satellite’s operation also marks 50 years of Indonesia’s journey in the space industry since the launch of Palapa A1 in 1976.

“Today, we proudly inaugurate the operation of Nusantara 5, an important symbol for our nation in maintaining our own national independence,” Adi said in Jakarta on Monday evening, May 11, 2026.

According to Adi, Nusantara Lima’s service coverage includes Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines. He added that the Philippines has started recognizing the satellite’s capacity as part of its national connectivity requirements.

“Nusantara 5 covers Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, strengthening Indonesia’s role in delivering digital connectivity across the ASEAN region,” he explained.

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Viada Hafid, said the presence of Nusantara Lima reinforces Indonesia’s position in Asia’s space industry. The satellite is also expected to support national digital transformation efforts, particularly in remote regions.

“This is a source of pride that Indonesia is not only present in geopolitics, but that our presence in space is also being recognized,” Meutya stated.

She also noted that the government aims to expand internet connectivity across all regions of Indonesia. Currently, around 230 million people, or approximately 80% of the national population, already have internet access.

Indonesia’s Expanding Satellite Capacity

Meanwhile, CEO of Boeing Satellite International, Ryan Reid, acknowledged that Nusantara Lima is one of the most complex satellite projects ever developed in collaboration with PSN.

“We also see Indonesia becoming an important player in the regional satellite connectivity industry,” Ryan said.

For information, Satelit Nusantara Lima has a capacity of more than 160 Gbps and is equipped with 101 Ku-band spot beams to support real-time internet distribution.

The technology enables internet capacity to be redirected to remote areas and disaster-affected regions. The satellite is also designed to operate for more than 15 years.

PSN revealed that total investment in the development of Indonesia’s national space industry has so far exceeded Rp23 trillion. Together with other operational national satellites, Indonesia’s total satellite capacity has now reached around 400 Gbps across the Asia-Pacific region.

Conclusion

The operation of Satelit Nusantara Lima marks a major milestone in strengthening Indonesia’s digital infrastructure and space industry capabilities. With expanded connectivity coverage across remote regions and neighboring ASEAN countries, the satellite is expected to accelerate digital transformation, improve internet accessibility, and reinforce Indonesia’s position as a growing regional player in satellite connectivity and space technology.
