Prabowo Warns of AI Risks, Says It Could Pose a Threat to Humanity

18 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has cautioned that while Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers significant opportunities, it also carries potential risks that must be carefully managed to ensure it benefits humanity rather than becoming a threat.

Speaking at the closing of the National Symposium of the 2026 Indonesian Science, Technology, and Industry Convention on Sunday, Prabowo emphasized that countries around the world are racing to develop AI in order to remain globally competitive.

However, he noted that even many of AI's pioneers have warned about the technology's long-term implications.

"Today, almost every country is pursuing Artificial Intelligence because no one wants to be left behind. Yet the very people who pioneered AI have also warned that it could eventually create serious challenges for humanity," Prabowo said.

The president also referred to reports suggesting that there are currently around five million AI agents, some of which are believed to be capable of communicating with one another using their own coded language.

"We have heard reports that there are now about five million AI agents. They are even said to have their own chat rooms and communicate using their own coded language," he added.

Balancing Innovation with Responsible Governance

Prabowo stressed that Indonesia must remain vigilant as AI technologies continue to evolve. While recognizing AI's transformative potential, he underscored the importance of establishing strong governance and responsible oversight to minimize potential risks.

According to the president, the rapid advancement of AI should be accompanied by policies that ensure the technology is developed and deployed in ways that continue to serve human interests.

Conclusion

Prabowo's remarks highlight the growing global debate over the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence. As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, he emphasized that Indonesia must pursue innovation while implementing responsible governance to ensure technological progress remains beneficial, secure, and centered on humanity.
