Jakarta, INTI - Digital Quran learning platform Qara'a has launched Indonesia's first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered digital Quran recitation competition as part of the celebration of the Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1448 Hijri.
Held over two days at the Conference Hall of Tanjungpura University (Untan) in Pontianak, the event formed part of the "Muharram Hijrah Bareng" program and brought together dozens of students from eight Quran learning centers (Rumah Qur'an) across the city.
The competition, titled "Muharram Versi Pemenang (MVP) League," served as both a contest and a performance evaluation platform for students learning through the Qara'a application. The event combined AI-based assessment with direct evaluation from qualified Islamic teachers to ensure participants' recitations complied with proper tajwid rules.
In addition to the competition, Qara'a organized the Lingkar Parents Workshop under the theme "Strong Family, Smart Financial," providing educational sessions for parents. Winners of the digital Quran recitation competition were announced on the second day after scores generated by the AI system were verified by the judging panel.
AI Enhances Quran Learning While Teachers Ensure Accuracy
Qara'a Co-founder Ahmad Kamel said the company is committed to helping Quran learning centers overcome challenges in manually monitoring students' progress through digital innovation.
"Many Quran learning centers still face difficulties in tracking students' development. Through this digital innovation, we hope to improve learning quality while contributing to the eradication of Quranic illiteracy in Indonesia," Ahmad said during the closing ceremony.
According to Ahmad, the Qara'a application has now been used by more than two million users across Indonesia. In Pontianak alone, eight Quran learning centers participated by sending their top students to compete in the AI-powered recitation contest.
The platform was designed to make Quran learning more accessible, particularly for people with limited time or those who feel uncomfortable attending face-to-face classes. Using AI technology, the application provides users with instant feedback on their Quran recitation.
However, Ahmad emphasized that AI complements rather than replaces human expertise.
"AI improves efficiency, but the human element remains essential. Our teachers continue to validate and review every assessment to ensure each recitation follows proper tajwid principles," he said.
Conclusion
By integrating artificial intelligence with expert human evaluation, Qara'a is introducing a new approach to Quran education in Indonesia. The initiative demonstrates how AI can enhance religious learning while maintaining accuracy, helping expand access to quality Quran education and supporting digital innovation in the education sector.
