Jakarta, INTI - PT PLN (Persero) Bali Distribution Main Unit (UID Bali), together with several partners, is preparing Battery Swap System infrastructure at five locations in Klungkung Regency, Bali, to support the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem.
PLN UID Bali General Manager Ajrun Karim said PLN would support the electricity requirements and power connections needed for the installation and operation of the pilot project.
“Through this cooperation, PLN UID Bali is fully committed to providing the necessary support, particularly in terms of electricity supply and power connections. This infrastructure will support the installation and operation of the Battery Swap System pilot project at five strategic locations in Klungkung Regency,” Ajrun said following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between PLN UID Bali, PT INAKO Kreta Udhaya, the Korea Smart e-Mobility Association (KEMA), and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH) at Wyndham Tamansari Jivva Resort, Klungkung.
On-site electricity support will be provided by PLN’s East Bali Distribution Unit (UP3) through the Klungkung Customer Service Unit (ULP), based on power requirements and applicable regulations.
Meanwhile, INAKO, KEMA, and KATECH will be responsible for securing the necessary permits and power connection requirements.
Five Electric Vehicles to Begin Operations in October
The pilot project is scheduled to begin in October 2026 with the deployment of five three-wheeled electric vehicles for specialized functions.
The electric vehicles will be used for waste collection, refrigerated transport, and goods transportation.
The development will also include three- and small four-wheeled electric agricultural vehicles for transportation and spraying applications.
The program is planned to expand in 2027, with more than 30 electric vehicles expected to operate across Bali.
Supporting the Nusa Penida Green Island 2030 Target
Klungkung Regent I Made Satria said the development of electric vehicles is aligned with the local government’s efforts to establish Nusa Penida as a green island by 2030.
“If Nusa Penida becomes a green island, it will become a more premium tourism destination. We are continuing to prepare for this gradually so that the target can be fully achieved by 2030,” Satria said.
The development of the electric vehicle ecosystem is also expected to support sustainable tourism while creating new business opportunities for local communities.
The cooperation also covers field testing to assess the compatibility and quality of the battery-swapping system, as well as the utilization of usage and system monitoring data to support further technology development.
The parties may continue their collaboration through separate cooperation agreements as needed, supporting the development of an integrated electric mobility ecosystem in Klungkung.
Ajrun said the combination of electricity infrastructure, technology, and cross-border cooperation could accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles while supporting environmentally friendly transportation and the growth of Bali’s green economy.
Conclusion
The Battery Swap System pilot in Klungkung marks a collaborative effort to strengthen Bali’s electric mobility infrastructure. With five pilot locations in 2026 and plans to expand the fleet to more than 30 electric vehicles in 2027, the initiative is intended to support sustainable transportation, green tourism, and the development of Bali’s green economy.
