Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia is emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in developing transportation systems that are efficient, safe, connected, and digitally enabled through the exchange of information, experience, and emerging technologies.
Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana made the statement on the sidelines of the Global Sustainable Transport Forum (GSTF) 2026, held in Beijing, China, on September 22–23, 2026.
“One of the most important elements in developing high-quality and connected transportation systems is cooperation between countries. By exchanging information and experiences, we can share knowledge and innovation while learning from what other countries have implemented and considering what could be applied in Indonesia,” Suntana said in Beijing on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The GSTF serves as a global platform for cooperation on sustainable transportation challenges while supporting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Indonesia Explores Digitalization and AI in Transportation
Suntana said Indonesia is studying the implementation of digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) in transportation systems across various countries.
“We have learned a great deal from presentations by different countries. We have seen how digitalization and AI are being implemented to make transportation more efficient, safer, better coordinated, and more accurate in terms of timing, including here in China,” he said.
According to Suntana, the experiences of other countries can provide valuable references and opportunities for evaluation as Indonesia develops transportation innovations.
“We learn from transportation challenges faced by other countries while evaluating the issues we encounter domestically. These insights can then be developed into innovative solutions supported by AI and digitalization, enabling transportation systems that connect people, goods, and other activities to operate more effectively,” Suntana added.
Indonesia also supports the establishment of a global cooperation platform initiated by China through GSTF 2026, although no new bilateral memorandum of understanding was signed during the meeting.
“There was a joint statement from the ministers responsible for transportation, which will serve as a reference for follow-up cooperation, both bilaterally and multilaterally, including through APEC. This allows us to learn from advances in transportation in other countries,” Suntana explained.
Digital Technology Expands Across Transportation Modes
Suntana also led Indonesia’s delegation at the 12th APEC Transportation Ministerial Meeting, where he presented the country’s progress in digital transformation across the transportation sector.
The meeting adopted a Joint Ministerial Statement reaffirming APEC members’ commitment to advancing digital technologies to build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable transportation and connectivity across the Asia-Pacific region.
Indonesia has implemented several transportation decarbonization initiatives, including vehicle electrification and the development of MRT, LRT, and BRT systems, as well as integrated transportation networks across Greater Jakarta.
In the maritime sector, Indonesia is adopting low-carbon fuels and solar power for port infrastructure while utilizing AI to forecast demand and optimize routes, navigation, and the management of vessels, cargo, and port operations.
In aviation, Indonesia is promoting the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), energy-efficient airport technologies, and exploring AI applications for real-time aircraft emissions monitoring, airport slot management, and capacity optimization.
During the APEC meeting, Indonesia also sought support from member economies for its candidacy for a seat on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council under Part III in the election scheduled to take place during the 43rd ICAO Extraordinary Assembly in November 2026.
