Jakarta, INTI – A new breakthrough in green energy has emerged from the hands of the nation’s own talent. PT Pertamina (Persero) has successfully processed used cooking oil into eco-friendly Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), making it the pioneer in Southeast Asia. The product was officially launched during the First SAF Lifting event at Pertamina’s Cilacap Refinery on Tuesday (August 12, 2025), marking a concrete step in accelerating the clean energy transition and supporting the government’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2060 target.
Green Energy Breakthrough from Used Cooking Oil
Pertamina’s President Commissioner, Mochamad Iriawan, described this innovation as proof of Indonesia’s capability to make major leaps in the green energy sector. “This is an extraordinary creation by our nation’s talent. Pertamina is capable of becoming a pioneer in Southeast Asia,” he said.
This SAF, produced from used cooking oil, is processed using the Merah Putih catalyst developed by Pertamina in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). The achievement marks a significant milestone in strengthening national energy security and reducing carbon emissions.
Meeting International Standards
Pertamina’s SAF product has met the international ASTM D1655 and DefStan 91-091 standards, becoming the first officially certified SAF product in Southeast Asia.
Pertamina has also developed a fully certified International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) SAF ecosystem, ensuring that the entire production process meets global sustainability principles.
Commitment to NZE 2060
Pertamina’s Vice President Director, Oki Muraza, emphasized that SAF represents a strategic step toward global decarbonization while fulfilling Indonesia’s commitment to achieving NZE 2060. “The development of green energy comes from courage and commitment across all levels of management to ensure that innovations align with market needs, are profitable, and are sustainable,” he explained.
As part of its contribution to Indonesia’s upcoming 80th Independence Day celebration, Pertamina has prepared 32 kiloliters of used cooking oil-based SAF for one of Pelita Air’s flights in mid-August 2025.
Driving Industry and National Economy
Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that green energy development is part of the company’s dual growth strategy. Beyond safeguarding energy security, this innovation also helps grow the domestic industry.
“As a state-owned energy enterprise, Pertamina holds a strategic position as both the guardian of energy security and a driver of national economic growth,” he affirmed.
Conclusion
Through the production of SAF from used cooking oil, Pertamina reinforces its commitment as a leader in Indonesia’s energy transition. This initiative not only supports the achievement of NZE 2060 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also strengthens energy sovereignty, boosts industrial growth, and delivers tangible contributions to the environment.
