Pertamina Patra Niaga Strengthens Used Cooking Oil Ecosystem to Support SAF and Green Gasoline Development

6 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Through its subsidiary Pertamina Patra Niaga, Pertamina is continuing to strengthen its Used Cooking Oil (UCO) collection initiative as part of its efforts to develop more sustainable energy sources. Collected used cooking oil has the potential to serve as a feedstock for various energy products, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Green Gasoline.

By developing a UCO collection ecosystem, Pertamina Patra Niaga is encouraging participation from communities and business partners to maximize the utilization of used cooking oil generated by households and food businesses. Collection activities are carried out through various channels, including cooperatives, as part of efforts to establish a more structured and sustainable alternative feedstock supply chain.

This initiative represents not only a more productive approach to waste management but also an initial step toward building a sustainable energy ecosystem from upstream to downstream. Collected used cooking oil has the potential to be further processed into SAF to support the aviation industry's energy needs, as well as Green Gasoline as an alternative fuel product.

Pertamina Patra Niaga VP of Corporate Communication, Kitty Andhora, stated that the used cooking oil collection initiative reflects Pertamina's contribution to optimizing available community resources while supporting the national energy transition agenda.

“Pertamina Patra Niaga recognizes the significant potential of used cooking oil as a future energy feedstock. Through this collection initiative, we aim to establish an ecosystem involving communities and various partners so that used cooking oil can be managed more effectively and generate added value. Its potential applications extend beyond Sustainable Aviation Fuel development to include Green Gasoline,” Kitty explained.

Refinery Technology and Circular Economy Support Sustainable Fuel Development

On the downstream side, developing energy products derived from used cooking oil also requires adequate infrastructure and processing technology within Pertamina's operations. Refinery readiness to process alternative feedstocks is a crucial factor in ensuring the sustainable development of products such as SAF and Green Gasoline.

Consequently, Pertamina Patra Niaga's UCO collection initiative plays a strategic role in connecting community-based feedstock potential with the needs of the industrial processing sector. Synergy between feedstock availability, collection systems, and refinery technology readiness provides an important foundation for establishing Indonesia's sustainable energy ecosystem.

“Developing future energy sources requires a comprehensive ecosystem, starting from feedstock availability and collection systems to the industry's processing capabilities. Therefore, Pertamina continues to encourage cross-sector collaboration to maximize the potential of used cooking oil and generate added value for both communities and the national energy industry,” Kitty added.

This initiative is also aligned with circular economy principles, which aim to transform materials previously considered waste into resources with economic value and broader benefits. In addition to supporting alternative energy development, proper used cooking oil management can also encourage more responsible consumption and production practices.

Pertamina Patra Niaga will continue strengthening collaboration with various stakeholders to develop its used cooking oil collection ecosystem, supporting SAF and Green Gasoline development as well as Indonesia's broader national energy transition agenda.

Conclusion

Pertamina Patra Niaga is strengthening Indonesia's sustainable energy ecosystem by turning used cooking oil into valuable feedstock for SAF and Green Gasoline. Through community participation, strategic partnerships, and refinery technology development, the initiative supports circular economy practices and accelerates the country's energy transition.
