Pertamina NRE and USGBC Signed Partnership in Developing Indonesia’s Bioethanol Industry

Jakarta, INTI - Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the US Grains & BioProducts Council on March 27, 2026, to enhance cooperation in developing Indonesia’s bioethanol sector through joint research, knowledge exchange, and capacity building programs.

USGBC, an international non-profit representing stakeholders in grain and bio-based industries, supports market development via education, advocacy, technical assistance, and the promotion of best practices.

The partnership focuses on strengthening capabilities by adopting global standards, facilitating knowledge exchange, and building expertise to support the growth of Indonesia’s bioethanol ecosystem, including the potential implementation of E10 ethanol-blended fuel.

Oki Muraza, Vice President and Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), said that bioethanol plays a strategic role in balancing energy security and sustainability, noting that international insights will be important to developing the bioethanol ecosystem, including feedstock diversification, regulatory frameworks, and domestic fuel implementation.

What The Companies Will Do Under The Agreement

Under the agreement, both parties will carry out joint studies and exploratory initiatives aimed to improve the bioethanol supply chain and infrastructure, which also covers its technical, commercial, and regulatory readiness. The collaboration also includes training programs, expert exchanges, and forums or workshops to share global best practices.

President Director of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, stated that the initiative aligns with Pertamina NRE’s strategy to accelerate the energy transition through knowledge-driven partnerships, emphasizing the importance of structured learning and institutional capacity building.

Additionally, the collaboration promotes domestic capability development through technology adoption, operational improvements, and enhanced understanding of bioethanol production and feedstock management. It also facilitates dialogue on market development, sustainability frameworks, and public communication strategies to support ethanol-blended fuel implementation. 

Chairman of USGBC, Mark Wilson, said that the MoU is intended as a practical platform for implementation, focusing on strengthening technical readiness, supply chains, and market development.
