OpenAI Secures the Largest Funding Round in History, with Amazon as Lead Investor

1 month ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - OpenAI has announced a massive $110 billion funding round (approximately Rp 1,848 trillion) in its latest capital raise, marking the largest private financing deal in the history of technology companies.

In this round, Amazon emerged as the largest investor, committing $50 billion (around Rp 840.12 trillion).

Of that total, Amazon will deploy an initial $15 billion (about Rp 252.04 trillion), followed by an additional $35 billion (approximately Rp 588.09 trillion) in the coming months once certain conditions are met.

Beyond Amazon, semiconductor giant Nvidia and Japanese multinational SoftBank each contributed $30 billion, equivalent to roughly Rp 504.07 trillion.

Following the deal, the valuation of ChatGPT creator OpenAI has surged to $730 billion (around Rp 12,265 trillion), prior to accounting for the new funding. This represents a significant jump from its $500 billion valuation recorded during last October’s secondary financing.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the funding as critical to meeting the rapidly growing demand for AI computing power.

“AI will be everywhere. It is transforming the entire economy, and the world requires enormous collective computing power to meet that demand,” Altman said, as reported by CNBC.

Strategic Partnership with Amazon

In addition to the investment, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI announced a long-term strategic partnership.

AWS will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI’s enterprise platform, Frontier. The platform enables companies to build and manage AI agent teams with enterprise-grade security and governance.

OpenAI is also expanding its previous $38 billion agreement with AWS, adding a fresh $100 billion commitment (around Rp 1,680 trillion) over the next eight years.

As part of the agreement, OpenAI will utilize approximately 2 gigawatts (GW) of computing capacity powered by AWS’s Trainium chips, including future-generation Trainium 3 and Trainium 4 processors, to support large-scale AI workloads.

Amazon and the world’s most valuable private AI company will also co-develop specialized AI models designed for Amazon’s customer service applications.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is further strengthening its collaboration with Nvidia, which continues to dominate the global GPU market.

The San Francisco-based AI company will deploy 3GW of inference capacity and 2GW of training capacity on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems.

This move underscores the enormous computing requirements OpenAI faces in advancing generative AI models and expanding its enterprise platform capabilities.

Conclusion

This historic funding round not only cements OpenAI’s position as the world’s most valuable private AI company, but also signals an unprecedented surge in global AI infrastructure investment. With strategic backing from Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank, the race for computing power is becoming central to the next phase of AI-driven economic transformation.
