OpenAI has Postponed the Stargate Data Center Project in the United Kingdom

4 days ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - OpenAI has postponed its Stargate infrastructure project in the UK, citing high energy costs and the regulatory environment.

"We see huge potential for the UK's AI future,” said the company in a statement on Thursday, April 9, 2026. "AI compute is foundational to that goal. We continue to explore Stargate UK and will move forward when the right conditions, such as regulation and the cost of energy, enable long-term infrastructure investment."

OpenAI announced the project in September, as part of a wave of investment from American tech giants during Donald Trump’s visit to the UK.

The ruling Labour Party has made artificial intelligence and data centers a pillar of its economic growth plans, but the country has some of the highest energy costs in Europe.

After announcing the Stargate data center project in the US, OpenAI said it would expand the effort to other countries.

In the UK, the private company said it was working with Nvidia Corp. and Nscale, a British data center developer, on the Stargate project, but did not disclose the planned investment.

OpenAI emphasized on Thursday that it would continue to work with the UK government to reach an agreement to provide ChatGPT and other services to public services.
