Onno W. Purbo's - Initiative Promotes Indonesia's Digital Sovereignty, AI Gotong Royong

2 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Indonesian information technology expert, Onno W. Purbo, introduced the concepts of AI Gotong Royong and Offline Internet to INTI Friends in a recent discussion session. Known as a scientist, educator, author, and speaker in the field of information technology, Onno reiterated the importance of digital sovereignty based on public participation.

In his presentation, Prof. Onno reviewed the definition, approach, and fundamental differences between AI Gotong Royong and other artificial intelligence models currently developing globally. Technologically, he stated, there are no significant differences compared to popular AI platforms such as OpenAI through its products ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini.

The difference lies in the economic approach and ownership. In countries like the United States, AI development is strongly driven by large industrial investment, resulting in significant economic benefits. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, although several government agencies, such as the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), have developed AI initiatives, their utilization is considered uneven and has not fully reached the needs of the wider community.

People Driven AI

Prof. Onno emphasized, "We're making AI driven directly by the people." This concept emphasizes building an AI ecosystem that is affordable, simple, yet functional and relevant to the needs of the community.

The term "Gotong Royong" was chosen to emphasize the spirit of collaboration: AI built by the people, for the people, and from the people. Technologically, the system used is not significantly different from AI in general. However, philosophically and profit-oriented, AI Gotong Royong is designed to be more inclusive and not solely oriented towards the profits of large industries.

As part of digital literacy efforts, Prof. Onno also provides free e-books on how to build AI for elementary, middle, and high school/vocational high school students, accessible through the Intech Press platform. This step is expected to broaden the younger generation's understanding of artificial intelligence technology from an early age.

5-10 Year Vision

In the long-term plan for the next five to ten years, AI Gotong Royong is expected to become the foundation of national digital independence. Prof. Onno stated, "the essence is so that the Indonesian nation can be more prosperous, more sovereign, and self-sufficient."

He also hopes that Indonesians can utilize AI to improve efficiency in various aspects of life, as has been implemented in several developed countries. With its collaborative and community-based approach, AI Gotong Royong is expected to become not only a technological innovation but also a social movement to strengthen national sovereignty and prosperity.

Conclusion

AI Gotong Royong offers an alternative approach to developing artificial intelligence in Indonesia, not merely pursuing technological sophistication, but rather building an AI ecosystem that is inclusive, affordable, and oriented towards the interests of the people.
