1 week ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - Microsoft has committed to investing US$5.5 billion in Singapore through 2029 as part of its expansion of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry in Asia. The funds will be used to build cloud and AI infrastructure and strengthen the company's operations in the country. Microsoft also plans to provide Microsoft 365 Premium with Copilot and the company’s suite of productivity tools free of charge for tertiary education students.

Microsoft President Brad Smith stated that the company's primary focus is on helping individuals and organizations leverage AI through skill development, strengthening cybersecurity, and developing strong technology governance.

“We’re focused on helping people and organizations use AI by strengthening skills, increasing cybersecurity and resilience, and advancing trusted governance so technology delivers real benefits for Singaporeans,” said Smith during the Asia Tech x Inspire event in Singapore on April 1, 2026.

Singapore as the Center to Expand Tech Market in Southeast Asia

Global technology companies center Singapore as the strategic base to reach the Southeast Asian market, which has a population of approximately 700 million and is experiencing accelerated digitalization. In January, Micron Technology announced an additional US$24 billion investment to expand its manufacturing capacity in the country.

The Singaporean government has designated AI as a national priority by encouraging investment in research, governance, and education. The country is also opening up opportunities for global AI talents by providing dedicated recruitment pathways and work visas to attract experts into the country’s technology ecosystem.

Microsoft plans to invest US$5.5 billion in Singapore through 2029 to strengthen its cloud and AI infrastructure and expand its operations in Southeast Asia. This investment also includes providing free AI tools for students and enhancing digital skills. This move aligns with Singapore's strategy of making AI a national priority and attracting global talent to strengthen its technology ecosystem.
