Meta Introduces Smart Bracelet That Reads Hand Movements Innovatively

8 months ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI – Interaction with digital devices has traditionally relied on touchscreens, keyboards, or mice. Meta has introduced sEMG-RD, a smart bracelet capable of reading hand movements and translating them into digital commands. This technology not only serves as a replacement for the mouse but also opens new ways for users to control devices without touching anything, including those with mobility limitations.

How the sEMG-RD Smart Bracelet Works
The sEMG-RD bracelet captures motor nerve signals from the wrist muscles and converts them into digital input. With a finger pinch, thumb swipe, or air writing, users can control screens or even type text directly in the air. Typing speed reaches 20.9 words per minute. Although not yet matching the average smartphone keyboard speed of 36 words per minute, this technology demonstrates significant progress.

No Calibration Needed and Ready to Use
Interestingly, the sEMG-RD does not require user-specific calibration. Meta trained the system using data from thousands of participants through deep learning to recognize common patterns of motor nerve signals. As a result, anyone can use the bracelet immediately, just like using a mouse: simply wear it and start.

History and Broader Potential
The initial prototype of sEMG-RD was developed in 2021 by Reality Labs, initially focused on augmented reality (AR) interactions. Today, its potential applications are far broader, including for users with mobility or muscle limitations. Meta also sees opportunities to enhance gesture strength detection and explore entirely new ways to interact with digital systems previously unimagined.

Conclusion
The sEMG-RD smart bracelet introduces a more natural and inclusive way of interacting with digital devices. By reading hand movements and converting them into digital commands, this technology has the potential to transform how we work and interact with gadgets, while also opening new access opportunities for all users.
