Jakarta, INTI - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is accelerating the adoption of 5G and AI technologies across Indonesia’s railway system. To advance this initiative, KAI has partnered with PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk (Surge) and Huawei through a strategic tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Through this collaboration, KAI aims to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and passenger experience. The agreement outlines joint efforts to explore and implement advanced solutions across key areas of railway operations. These include strengthening ICT infrastructure with a highly reliable backbone network, expanding high-quality wireless coverage across stations and depots, and deploying cloud-based solutions to ensure business continuity and scalable service expansion.
5G and AI Solutions to Transform Railway Operations
In addition, the partnership will support the development of a 5G-based Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), designed to improve safety, efficiency, and service quality. A pilot project is planned along the Rangkasbitung–Tanah Abang route, focusing on intelligent level crossing safety and more advanced train operation management.
The collaboration also introduces AI-powered freight wagon detection, utilizing video analytics to enable intelligent disruption detection and automated alerts. This is expected to improve turnaround efficiency while reducing the need for manual inspections.
KAI CEO Bobby Rasyidin emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to improve railway safety and service quality. He noted that the partnership with Surge and Huawei will accelerate KAI’s digital transformation and deliver benefits to hundreds of millions of passengers and freight customers across Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Surge President Director Yune Marketatmo described the collaboration as a significant step toward modernizing Indonesia’s railway system, combining Surge’s digital infrastructure expertise, Huawei’s cutting-edge technology, and KAI’s operational leadership to deliver world-class 5G and AI solutions.
Raymond Zuo, CEO of Huawei Smart Rail BU, added that Huawei is proud to support this strategic initiative. He highlighted that 5G FRMCS solutions and AI-driven applications will help transform railway operations through real-time communication, intelligent scheduling, and predictive maintenance.
Conclusion
The collaboration between KAI, Surge, and Huawei marks a significant step toward modernizing Indonesia’s railway system through the integration of 5G and AI technologies. By combining advanced infrastructure, intelligent communication systems, and AI-driven analytics, the initiative is expected to enhance safety, streamline operations, and deliver a more reliable and efficient experience for both passengers and freight services.
