Indonesia’s Communications Ministry and Police Strengthen Cooperation to Combat Online Gambling, Digital Fraud, and Internet Infrastructure Theft

2 hours ago | Network Infrastructure

Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, and National Police Chief Suyudi Ario Seto are strengthening cooperation to combat cross-border online gambling, digital fraud, and other cybercrimes. The partnership between the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) covers prevention, law enforcement, and the protection of telecommunications infrastructure from criminal activities that disrupt public services.

“We believe that stronger collaboration moving forward will help reduce online gambling activities in Indonesia. This is also one of the major concerns raised by the public,” Meutya said following a meeting with the National Police Chief at the National Police Headquarters in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Meutya said public complaints include data trading, online fraud, online gambling, pornography, bullying, misinformation, and hoaxes. The broad scope of these issues makes inter-agency cooperation essential, combining preventive measures with law enforcement through the accelerated implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Komdigi and Polri.

“These challenges are far too extensive for Komdigi to address alone. Therefore, collaboration with the National Police is crucial to combine preventive efforts with law enforcement measures,” Meutya explained.

Meutya also praised the National Police Chief and his team for their swift response to online gambling cases involving cross-border networks. She expressed hope that stronger cooperation would help curb online gambling and improve efforts to tackle online scams that have caused public concern.

“We appreciate the National Police Chief’s efforts. In less than a month, authorities have already taken action against an online gambling operation whose network extends beyond Indonesia and operates across national borders,” Meutya stated.

Authorities Target Telecommunications Infrastructure Theft and Strengthen Digital Security

Beyond cybercrime, Meutya highlighted the theft of cables and base transceiver station (BTS) equipment, which disrupts internet access and telecommunications services in various regions. Legal action against these offenses is necessary to maintain reliable connectivity and ensure the continuity of public services.

“We once again appreciate the legal measures taken against BTS equipment theft, which has resulted in disruptions to public services in various regions across Indonesia,” Meutya said.

National Police Chief Suyudi Ario Seto emphasized that rapid technological advancements must be accompanied by stronger public digital literacy and swift law enforcement against cybercrime. Online fraud, online gambling, and romance scams are among the issues that require decisive action because they distress communities and threaten national security.

“Crimes in the digital space can be reduced through swift and effective action. These activities are seriously disrupting public life and causing widespread concern,” Suyudi stressed.

Suyudi also highlighted the spread of false information and hoaxes, which require stronger responses, including improved regulatory frameworks. He expressed hope that cooperation between Komdigi and Polri would continue to expand to create a safer digital environment.

“False information and hoaxes are also a major source of public concern. These issues require strong regulatory measures, as also discussed by the Minister,” Suyudi said.

Suyudi further expressed hope that the strengthened MoU between the two institutions, formalized in April, would enhance their coordination in safeguarding Indonesia’s digital security and addressing public concerns.

“Hopefully, our strengthened collaboration through the MoU established in April will help deliver what the public expects: a safer digital environment and stronger national digital security in Indonesia,” Suyudi concluded.

Conclusion

Indonesia is strengthening its digital security efforts through closer cooperation between Komdigi and Polri to combat online gambling, digital fraud, hoaxes, and telecommunications infrastructure theft. By combining preventive measures, law enforcement, and public digital literacy, the partnership aims to protect citizens, maintain reliable connectivity, and create a safer digital ecosystem nationwide.
