Indonesians Can Use QRIS in South Korea Starting April 2026

2 months ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), Perry Warjiyo, stated that Indonesian citizens in South Korea will soon be able to use QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) for transactions there. Perry announced this in a press conference following the Board of Governors' Meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

"The launch of Indonesia’s QRIS in South Korea in April 2026 is part of an effort to expand cross-border digital payment connectivity and accelerate digital acceptance," he explained.

Previously, BI and the Bank of Korea (BoK) had agreed to open cashless transaction services using the QRIS system.

The agreement was reached at a High-Level Meeting attended by BI Governor, Perry Warjiyo, and BoK Governor, Rhee Chang-yong, in February 2026.

The agreement on this cross-border QR payment system is a follow-up to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in July 2024.

Improving Payment Activities and Transaction Costs

The two central banks hope this service will improve payment efficiency for tourists in both countries, in line with the implementation of the Local Currency Transaction (LCT) framework between Indonesia and South Korea, which has been in effect since September 2024.

Through this interconnection system, they believe foreign exchange conversion and transaction costs can be reduced. As well as real sector economic activity, such as trade, tourism, and consumption in both countries can be more supported.

Conclusion

Indonesia’s plan to launch QRIS in South Korea in April 2026 marks a significant step in strengthening cross-border digital payments between the two countries. This agreement between Bank Indonesia and the Bank of Korea is expected to make transactions easier and more efficient for tourists while reducing currency conversion and transaction costs. It is also expected to further support broader economic activities such as trade, tourism, and consumption.
