Jakarta, INTI – Marking a significant step forward in digital innovation, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) officially launched the AI Center of Excellence (AI COE) on Friday, July 11, 2025. The initiative is a result of a strategic collaboration with leading technology companies: Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, Cisco, and Nvidia.

This center is not only a symbol of Indonesia’s commitment to advancing artificial intelligence (AI) but also a concrete effort to strengthen local innovation and grow digital talent across the nation. Deputy Minister of Komdigi, Nezar Patria, emphasized the center’s potential to play a vital role in shaping the future of AI in the country.

Six Key Facilities to Support a Sustainable and Sovereign AI Ecosystem

In his statement, Nezar outlined six core pillars that form the foundation of the AI Center, each designed to support the development of a sovereign, sustainable, and impactful AI ecosystem:

  1. AI Sandbox A space for developing real-world AI applications in key sectors.
  2. Training and Certification Programs Aiming to equip tens of thousands of Indonesians with AI-related skills.
  3. Startup Accelerator Supporting the growth of local AI-based startups.
  4. Enterprise Hub Connecting industry players to co-develop practical AI solutions.
  5. National-Scale Large Language Model Platform – For building AI models tailored to Indonesia.
  6. National Think Tank Forum Focused on formulating ethical and responsible AI policies.

Nezar stated that the AI Center would not only serve as an innovation hub but also a means to extend AI benefits to communities across Indonesia.

Four Strategic Pillars in Building Indonesia’s AI Sovereignty

In addition to the six facilities, the AI COE is guided by four strategic pillars that define the direction of its development:

  1. Sovereign Infrastructure
Indonesia’s national AI foundation will be built using Indosat’s AI Factory and Nvidia’s supercomputing technology, enabling the country to develop AI models and applications that align with local needs and national priorities.
  2. Data and AI Application Security
Supported by Cisco, the center will feature Indonesia’s first AI-based Security Operations Center (SOC) to protect digital data and intellectual property, while ensuring data sovereignty.
  3. AI for All
A key commitment is to ensure that all Indonesians, from major cities to remote villages, benefit from AI by 2027, through Indosat’s network, Nvidia’s computing power, and the establishment of the country’s first AI Radio Access Network Lab.
  4. Talent and Ecosystem Development
The initiative aims to train nearly 500,000 individuals, with support from Indosat and Cisco’s Networking Academy, along with certified training from Deep Learning Institute, and startup support through Inception and Connect programs.

AI as a Driving Force for Indonesia’s Digital Future

Nezar Patria underscored that the AI Center of Excellence would be a cornerstone for Indonesia’s digital future. “With dedication, collaboration, and collective vision, the AI Center of Excellence will become a source of innovation, guiding the nation toward a brighter future empowered by AI,” he said.

The center also marks the tangible implementation of the national AI roadmap, turning plans into real, actionable programs for the advancement of the country.

Conclusion

The launch of the AI Center of Excellence represents a major leap for Indonesia in building technological sovereignty and boosting competitiveness in the era of artificial intelligence. With six strategic facilities and four pillars of development, the center stands as a symbol of progress, collaboration, and digital empowerment for all Indonesian citizens.
