Indonesia and South Korea Utilize Smart Farming Technology for A More Sustainable Industrial Production

1 week ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), through the Center for Sustainable Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Research (PRSIMB), has officially established a partnership with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), South Korea, to develop the mass production of high-value natural products in Indonesia through smart farming systems.

The main focus of this collaboration is to research the nutrient absorption patterns of native Indonesian plants under tropical conditions to support more efficient and sustainable industrial-scale production.

The Collaboration is Aimed to Optimize Indonesia’s Natural Products

The Head of BRIN's PRSIMB, Nugroho Adi Sasongko, stated that this collaboration is the second phase of ongoing collaborations. By adopting smart farming technology developed by KIST, Indonesia is expected to optimize the potential of local biological products to create high-value natural products.

"We are focusing on the nutrient absorption characteristics of superior Indonesian plants at each stage of their growth. Through KIST's smart farming technology, we can precisely measure the composition of nutrient solutions needed in tropical climates. This is crucial to ensuring the quality of our natural products meets global industry standards," said Nugroho.

The signing of the Cooperation Agreement (PKS) was conducted at the BRIN Thamrin Office, Jakarta, on Saturday, March 28, 2026. The agreement was signed by Dudi Iskandar, Head of the PRSIMB Project Cooperation at BRIN, and Soo Hyun Park, Team Leader and Cooperation Coordinator at KIST, represented by Lee Ju Young. Nunung Nuryantono, Deputy for Development Policy at BRIN, and Ratih Damayanti, Director of Environmental, Maritime, Natural Resources, and Nuclear Energy Policy at BRIN, were also present during the signing.

Joint Research Strengthens Future Agricultural Technologies

In addition to technical aspects of agriculture, this collaboration also encompasses intellectual property protection. Every new discovery resulting from this collaborative research will be registered as an international patent through a partnership with the Korea Intellectual Property Association (KIPA).

Through this one-year collaboration, BRIN and KIST are committed to increasing research capacity and strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and South Korea in the field of future agricultural technology. This step is part of BRIN's broader efforts to support the development of a sustainable industrial and manufacturing system in Indonesia.

Conclusion

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is collaborating with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to develop mass production of high-value natural products through smart farming system. This collaboration also includes intellectual property protection through international patent registration with the Korea Intellectual Property Association (KIPA), and aims to increase research capacity and strengthen relations between Indonesia and South Korea in developing sustainable agricultural technology.
