India Develops Long-Range Locally Powered Drone to Strengthen National Defense

10 months ago | Drone Industry

Jakarta, INTI – India’s efforts to reduce reliance on foreign technology have become increasingly evident as the government announced a major step in developing long-range drones powered by domestically produced engines. This initiative emerges amid a growing need for autonomous defense systems, especially as global security challenges continue to evolve. In a public–private partnership agreement unveiled in early December 2025, India set its sights on producing a new drone capable of flying up to 901 kilometers using a locally manufactured engine. The program provides a strategic solution to enhance unmanned aerial capabilities while boosting national industrial innovation. The initiative also marks an important momentum for India to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening modern defense capacity in the region.

Strategic Collaboration for Technological Self-Reliance

National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) plays a central role in the development of this drone after signing an agreement with a private-sector company to utilize an India-developed Wankel engine. Until now, India has relied heavily on foreign suppliers for UAV engine components, making this project a significant milestone toward full self-sufficiency in the defense sector.

NAL will transfer the technology for its 30-horsepower Wankel engine, which has already obtained flight-test certification. The engine can power the drone for up to nine continuous hours, enabling the UAV to reach distances exceeding 901 km representing a major advancement in India’s aerial operational capabilities.

Developing More Powerful Engine Variants

In addition to the initial 30 hp version, India is also developing a 50 hp engine variant, which is expected to enter the certification phase soon. Furthermore, a 90 hp engine designed for heavy-class UAVs is also under consideration. If realized, this engine will significantly expand the range and payload capacity of next-generation drones.

Under the agreement with Solar Defense and Aerospace Limited (SDAL), NAL will focus on research and development, while SDAL will handle manufacturing and marketing both domestically and internationally.

Drone Capable of Operating Without GPS

One of the key advantages of the UAV is its ability to operate in environments where GPS technology is unavailable. Supported by AI-powered payloads, the drone can deliver real-time intelligence and enhanced situational awareness. These capabilities make it highly valuable for defense missions, regional surveillance, and operations in high-risk conditions.

Government Support for Domestic Defense Industry

This project is part of the broader “Made in India” initiative championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, especially within the defense and space technology sectors. Modi recently praised the organization of a national drone challenge designed to encourage young innovators, facilitated by the Indian Space Research Organisation. He also highlighted the inauguration of the Infinity Campus of Skyroot Aerospace in Hyderabad as a major boost for the country’s space-tech ecosystem and technological advancement.

Conclusion

The development of long-range, locally powered drones marks a new chapter in India’s pursuit of defense independence. Equipped with domestically built engines, a flight capability of up to 901 km, and AI-based support, this project strengthens India’s position as a nation committed to advancing next-generation drone technology. Strong public–private collaboration ensures that technological independence is no longer just a vision but a concrete step toward the future of modern defense.
