Green Data Centers: Telkom’s Decarbonization Pillar Toward Net Zero Emissions

9 hours ago | Data Center

Jakarta, INTI - Achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) requires more than the adoption of renewable energy; it also depends on transforming digital infrastructure into more efficient and sustainable systems. Telkom is advancing this effort through the development of a green data center in Batam as part of its broader decarbonization strategy.

Data centers are among the most energy-intensive digital infrastructures, making them a key focus area in Telkom’s emission reduction roadmap. The company aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 20% by 2030, increase the reduction target to 40% by 2040, and reach 70% by 2050, before achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060.

These targets are supported by a 10% energy efficiency improvement through the implementation of AI, liquid cooling technology, equipment modernization, and outdoorization solutions, along with the deployment of more than 14 MWp of solar power capacity by 2030.

Telkom is also continuously increasing the use of renewable energy, targeting more than half of its data centers to operate on renewable energy-based electricity by 2040 and more than 60% by 2050.

Implementing a Green Data Center for a Sustainable Future

The company’s decarbonization strategy is implemented through six key pillars: energy efficiency and equipment modernization, electrification, renewable energy utilization and energy storage, Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) and Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), carbon offset initiatives, and government policy support.

As a concrete implementation of this roadmap, Telkom’s green data center in Batam is designed with a capacity of 100 MW IT Load, a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.4, and integration with solar power generation systems to support more sustainable digital infrastructure.

Conclusion

Telkom’s green data center initiative demonstrates how sustainable digital infrastructure can support Indonesia’s decarbonization goals. By combining energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and advanced technologies, Telkom is strengthening its commitment toward achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060.
