Jakarta, INTI - Australian artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure company Firmus Technologies has partnered with Nvidia Corp. to build an AI infrastructure data center in Batam, Indonesia. The project is predicted to be one of the largest AI computing clusters in Southeast Asia.

Firmus Technologies announced a strategic partnership with Nvidia to build its first AI infrastructure in Indonesia. Reuters reported that the collaboration includes Firmus purchasing Nvidia infrastructure and providing cloud services to native AI customers.

The infrastructure aims to provide access to AI computing at a more competitive cost for startups and emerging AI companies.

GPU Delivery Starts 2027

Under the partnership, Firmus and Nvidia will gradually supply approximately 170,000 units of the latest generation Graphics Processing Units (GPU) from the first quarter of 2027 to early 2028. The entire infrastructure will be located in Batam.

Firmus estimates the facility will generate up to USD 30 billion in revenue in its first six years of operation.

CEO of Firmus Technologies, Tim Rosenfield, said the partnership with Nvidia aims to expand access to AI infrastructure for companies that have previously struggled to obtain financing and computing capacity.

“We have worked to figure out how to close the gap ‌between the cost benefits that the large guys have access to, which they do because they have great credit ratings, and the guys that are up and comers,” said Tim Rosenfield.

Rosenfield believes this will create a more level playing field in the AI industry, giving new companies a greater opportunity to grow and compete with larger ones.

Indonesian Government’s Response

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government stated that the facility built by Firmus and Nvidia is projected to become one of the largest AI computing clusters in Southeast Asia. The investment by the two technology companies is also seen as strengthening Batam’s position as a high-value-added investment destination.

“Investors come because they see the future of a region. The government’s job is to ensure that future is built on a strong collaborative foundation and provides tangible benefits to the community,” said Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara, Indonesia’s Minister of Transmigration.
