Elon Musk Invests Rp300 Trillion in Large-Scale AI Data Center Development

5 months ago | Artificial Intelegence

Jakarta, INTI - xAI, the artificial intelligence company owned by Elon Musk, is moving to significantly expand its AI data center footprint in the United States after acquiring a third building in the Memphis area. The expansion marks another step in xAI’s push to scale up computing power amid intensifying global competition in artificial intelligence.

The newly acquired building will house thousands of additional servers to support AI model training and operations. According to Elon Musk, the expansion will lift the site’s total computing capacity to nearly 2 gigawatts, positioning it among the largest AI data center complexes in the world.

Colossus, the Core of xAI’s Infrastructure

The data center complex, known as Colossus, currently operates one large facility, while a second building referred to as Colossus 2 is under construction nearby.

The third site is located close to Colossus 2, near Southaven, Mississippi. Property records indicate the location was selected for its proximity to key energy infrastructure and access to additional power capacity, both critical for large-scale AI operations.

xAI plans to convert the newly acquired warehouse into a fully operational AI data center by early next year, in line with growing demand for high-performance computing.

Power-Hungry AI Facilities

AI data centers such as Colossus are known for their massive energy consumption. A capacity of nearly 2 gigawatts is estimated to be enough to supply electricity to approximately 1.5 million households in the United States for a full year.

Beyond electricity, water usage is another major challenge. Large volumes of water are required to cool servers and supporting infrastructure, and xAI is expected to consume millions of gallons of water per day at the site.

Addressing Environmental Concerns

To mitigate environmental impact, xAI has outlined several countermeasures. In February 2025, the company announced plans to build a new wastewater treatment facility near Colossus, with an estimated investment of around US$80 million.

The facility is designed to recycle up to 13 million gallons of wastewater per day, allowing xAI to reduce reliance on freshwater resources while maintaining operational efficiency.

Musk’s Vision and AI Rivalry

Elon Musk founded xAI in 2023 as a competitor to OpenAI, a company he previously co-founded before parting ways with Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, Mr. Sam Altman. xAI was established with the stated goal of developing AI systems that are transparent, secure, and broadly beneficial.

xAI’s flagship product, the generative AI chatbot Grok, is tightly integrated with the X platform, enabling real-time access to information. On the infrastructure side, Musk has repeatedly stated his ambition to make Colossus the world’s largest data center dedicated to AI training.

Colossus 2 is expected to host more than 555,000 graphics processing units from Nvidia Corp., with hardware investment estimated at around US$18 billion, excluding additional costs for servers, cooling systems, and supporting infrastructure.

Market Insight: Infrastructure as a Competitive Edge

The expansion of Colossus highlights a broader shift in the AI industry, where infrastructure scale has become as critical as algorithm development. Control over computing power, energy supply, and operational efficiency is increasingly shaping competitive advantage among AI players.

For the technology sector, xAI’s move underscores a growing trend: massive investment in data centers is becoming a strategic necessity as AI models grow more complex and resource-intensive.

Conclusion

xAI’s plan to expand the Colossus data center complex reflects its long-term ambition to compete at the highest level of the global AI industry. With large-scale investments in computing infrastructure and energy access, the company is strengthening its position in the race to develop advanced AI systems.

At the same time, rising energy consumption and environmental concerns remain key challenges. How effectively xAI balances technological ambition with sustainability will play a crucial role in determining its long term success.
