Discord to Roll Out Teen Safety Features Globally Starting March 2026

3 months ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - The communication platform Discord will begin rolling out its teen safety features globally in early March 2026, enabling teen-focused settings by default for both new and existing users, unless they have verified themselves as adults.

New Settings and Age Verification Mechanism

According to a report by Gizmochina, Discord will restrict access to age-based spaces, blur sensitive content such as images and videos, and restructure communication controls to reduce unwanted contact from unknown users.

Savannah Badalich, Discord’s Head of Product Policy, said, “Our goal is to provide stronger protections for teens while still allowing verified adults to fully use platform features.”

Only verified adult users will be able to access restricted channels, speak in stage servers, use adult application command features, and manage advanced message permissions.

Discord will also route messages from unfamiliar accounts into a separate inbox and issue alerts when teen users receive friend requests from unknown profiles.

To unlock adult access, users must verify their age either through an on-device video selfie process or by submitting official identification via a verification partner.

User identity data will be deleted once the verification process is completed. In addition, Discord is deploying a background age estimation system to assess whether an account is likely operated by an adult.

Privacy and Public Response

Users’ age status will remain private and will not be visible to other members on the platform. Discord has also introduced an appeal process for users who believe their age classification is inaccurate.

The company previously tested the teen safety settings in the United Kingdom and Australia, with the global rollout following positive results from those pilot programs.

Public reaction to the policy has been mixed. While many users have welcomed stronger content controls for teenagers, others have raised concerns about potential privacy risks, particularly related to mandatory age verification.

Data Security Issues and Global Collaboration

These concerns intensified after a data breach incident in late 2025 involving a third-party service provider, which reportedly affected around 70,000 user identity photos.

Discord stated that it has terminated access to the vendor involved and is cooperating with law enforcement authorities to investigate the breach.

The move aligns with a broader global trend across social media platforms. Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok have also introduced similar measures to strengthen protections for teen accounts.

In addition, Discord has established a Teen Council comprising 10 to 12 users aged 13 to 17 to provide direct input on future platform policies and safety features.

Conclusion

Discord’s global rollout of teen safety features marks a significant step in strengthening digital protection for younger users amid growing concerns over online exposure and privacy. By combining default protective settings, age verification mechanisms, and AI-driven monitoring, the platform aims to create a safer communication environment while maintaining access for verified adults.

However, public concerns over data security and verification privacy highlight the ongoing challenge tech companies face in balancing user safety with trust. As more digital platforms adopt similar safeguards, the success of Discord’s approach will likely shape the future standards of youth protection across the digital ecosystem
