Chinese Robot Outpaces 12,000 Human Runners in a Half Marathon

9 hours ago | Robot Industrial & Automation

Jakarta, INTI - A humanoid robot developed by a Chinese company has surpassed human performance in a half-marathon race held in Beijing, China, on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

The robot, named Lightning and created by Honor, a smartphone brand under Huawei, competed in the Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half-Marathon, an event that brought robots and humans together in the same competition.

Lightning completed the 21.1-kilometer race in just 50 minutes and 26 seconds, outperforming the human world record set by Ugandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo, who recorded a time of 57 minutes.

The victory was achieved after outperforming more than 12,000 human participants. The only issue occurred near the finish line, when Lightning briefly collided with a barrier just a few meters before the end. However, the robot quickly resumed the race after assistance from its team and successfully crossed the finish line.

The event took place in an industrial park area in Beijing and featured over 100 robots, significantly higher than last year’s participation of around 21 humanoid robots.

Although robots and humans competed in the same event, separate lanes were used to avoid collisions.

The fastest human runner, Zhao Haije, finished with a time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds. He acknowledged the speed of the robotic participants, stating, “I think the robots were moving very fast. They sped past me.”

Rapid Advancement of Autonomous Robotics in Competitive Events

Out of the robots participating, nearly 40% operated autonomously, successfully navigating turns, uneven terrain, and obstacles. The remaining 60% were remotely controlled, with adjusted finishing times to distinguish them from fully autonomous entries.

Among all participants, the red-colored Lightning robot emerged as the clear winner. Many other robots struggled, with some falling at the starting line or crashing into barriers during the race.

In comparison, last year’s competition saw even greater challenges, with robots stumbling, losing control, or failing to start. Only six out of 21 robots managed to reach the finish line.

According to event organizers, the winning robot is expected to receive commercial orders worth over one million yuan (approximately IDR 2.5 billion), reflecting growing interest in humanoid robotics technology.

Conclusion

The victory of the Lightning robot highlights the rapid progress of humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence, demonstrating capabilities that are beginning to rival, and even surpass, human performance in specific tasks. As technology continues to evolve, such breakthroughs signal broader implications for industries, automation, and the future relationship between humans and machines.
